Journal-Standard Photo Give The Bride Groom A Piece of Luggage From Spencer's (of course) Our Luggage 15 W. Stephenson-On The Plaza Bicentennial Thoughts "There is ample evidence that the nation has recovered from crises in confidence before and we can certainly do it again. Our future should not look any worse to us than it did to the people living in 1776 or 1876," Neil Lathrop told members of the Highland Community College 'Dames at the April meeting.

"Some Thoughts on the Bicentennial 1 was the subject of Lathrop, social science at the college. He noted the similarities between social and political forces at work during America's birth and the centennial birthdates. He also said that it was his "fervent hope" that during the bicentennial era the people of the United States will begin to celebrate their independence on the proper date. It was on July 2, 1776, that a motion by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was approved by the Second Continental Congress. That motion said, "That these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, Free and Independent States." July 4 is celebrated because that is the date on which the Declaration of Independence was adopted, even though John Hancock was the only person to sign it on that date.

New officers for the dames were elected. They are: Mrs.Robert Bangasser, president; Mrs. Howard Sims, vice president; Mrs. James Center, secretary; Mrs. Clarence Mayer, treasurer; Mrs.

Peter Vanish, reporter; and Mrs. Sid Fryer, historian. Mrs. Gene Wagner, past president, poured. Cohostesses were Mrs.

Roger Kreuzer and Mrs. Robert Brinkmeier. A cranberry sherbet dessert was served with cookies. Proceeds from last fall's art fair, more than $600, have been contributed to the college for two excellence and four divisional scholarships of $100 each. SWORD STONE'S "Ladies Nife" Every Wed, 4 p.m.
