mrm mm1: Fehruafy 8 1976 Ford's Westerns in Film Series WiM Forman's 'Cuckoo's Nest' In more than 50 years of film-making, director John Ford almost cornered the market in western Three Ford westerns "She Wore a Yellow Cheyenne Autumn," and "The Iron Horse" will be shown this week during the atheneum's "Legendary West" series. John Wayne became Ford's favorite western -leading man. In "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" Wayne plays a veteran cavalry officer, with Victor McLaglen as his longtime sergeant friend. The film was made in 1949, mostly on location in Monument Valley. The moving story of an old soldier in his last hurrah will be shown on Wednesday and Friday, at 7:30 p.m.

Made in 1924, it was based on the building of the first transcontinental railroad and was shot entirely on location in Nevada. McMurphy as he trespasses on the glass barrier between them in Milos Forman's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." l.V?:"..;.-.'.:..-;.;.: the ward are very vulnerable creatures, whose psychological defects are sensitively detailed by the actors who play them. William Redfield portrays the intelligent man whose marriage is too much for him right down to the fastidiously arranged hair and involuntary eye tics.

Christopher Lloyd is threatening, cruel, plainly psychotic, with a demented light in his eyes. Danny De Vito is a tiny patient whose head is amusing-; ly yet sadly scrambled, and Sydney Lassick is a confused, impressionable, easi-' ly led old man. The most moving figure on the ward is Brad'Dourif's Billy Bibbit, a painfully mother-dominated figure who stutters terribly. And towering silently over them all is Will Sampson's power-, ful; even mythical Indian. A more perfect Chief Bromden would be impossible to find.

All these men, and the oth-' ers on the ward too, are played as possessed, strange, only slightly theatricalized creatures who give the film, a heightened sense of reality that makes its ending both tragic and triumphant. Forman has handled every performance with such sensitivity and control that while there are many funny tour of twisted minds and misshapen faces as in Bedlam or Charenton. Wexler's photography contrasts the pale green walls and neon lights and glimpses of the natural outside world, with an occasional suggestion of freedom, as in a squirrel running along the high fence. Richard Chew has edited the film tightly, with some striking juxtapositions, Jack Nitzsche's eerie, haunting score is sparingly and effectively used. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next" is playing an ex-' elusive engagement at Showcase Cinemas in East Hartford and West "Cheyenne Autumn," directed by John Ford in 1964, 15 years after "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," will be screened at 9:30 p.m.

on Wednesday and Friday. The film tells the tragic and bitter story of the 1898 Cheyenne pilgrimage from a barren Oklahoma reservation back to their Wyoming homeland. Rooster Cogburn 5:15, 7, 8:55. of months for ah indeterminate sentence is a sobering, one which Nicholson pro-' jects beautifully. There is also an ambiguity to his character. Though he is clearly more sympathetic than the Big Nurse, the dangerous quality that the psychiatrists see in him is real. And if he is inspiring a struggle for liberation against the Nurse, the grave symbol of authority on the ward, his -sense of playf ulness and his incomprehension of the genuine frailties of his fellow inmates make him a careless leader.

This gives even his most amusing escapades a nerve-wracking quality, and every point he wins against Nurse Ratched makes it more certain that she will use the powers of her authority in some terrible way. And although McMurphy misses the point, the men on tain sort of petty dictator. In the film, the war of attrition between the two of them begins slowly, but the hostility is there almost from the start. They are clearly opposing types; the ultra neat, uptight nurse in starched white and unfashionably, but precisely pompadoured hair and the ill-shaven, carelessly dressed drifter with his thin hair standing up like a heron crest. The McMurphy that Nicholson details is a borderline mental case who may be trying to get out of work at the prison camp or may be a near psychopath.

But at first, life on the ward seems a vacation to him, a crazy place where cock-crowing and yahooing are natural reactions. JOHNSON "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is charged with flashes of irreverent humor, tension and a growing claustrophobic dread that make it a film of rare power and intelligence.

Fine books seldom become good movies, but the direction of Milos Forman and a strong and credible cast headed by Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher have brought Ken Kesey's 1962 novel compellingly to life. The film has a different feeling than the book, but it works the same effect, Kes-, ey's language is poetic and 1 subjective, and his handling of the struggle between liberation and repression in the context of a mental ward is clearly symbolic from the start. Forman, on the other hand, is almost clinically de-tat ched; Haskell Wexler's photography makes the film look like an elegant docu-' mentar The analogue to the larger world remains, but it accrues only gradually as the forces at war are drawn into sharper contrast. It is a brilliant and gripping film, and there is almost nothing in it that is out of place. Every performance is right, and many of them are far better than that.

Nicholson is not the type who springs readily to mind for the part of Randle Pat-: rick McMurphy; someone more physical and seasoned dwells in the mind's eye. But Nicholson takes very little time to convince you that he is perfect anyway: cocky, playfully crazy, anarchic, shrewd, destructive. The same is true of Fletcher's Nurse Ratched. Fletcher is too pretty for the Big Nurse of the imagination, and her legs are too slender. She lacks solidity.

But her Ratched with her cold, deceptive blue eyes, and the working of her mouth over her teeth, tense and domineering, becomes the personification of a cer- Gienda JacksonS.
