"WHY DO THE HEATHEN Psalm 2 and Acts 4:25 CONCERNING "PREACHING THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR." Isaiah 61:1: The Spirit of The Lord is upon Me: because The Lord hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; In Luke 4: 16, etc. we read that Jesus came to Nazareth where He had been brought up. and as His custom was He went into the synagogue on the sabbath dav, stood up to read and found the place in Isaiah where it was written: "The Spiritof The Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor After John the Baptist was put in prison by Herod. John sent two of his disciples to ask Christ if He was the one to come, or should thev look for another. One of the messages Christ sent back was: "TO THE POOR THE GOSPEL IS PREACHED," Luke 7:19, etc.

Here is a storv and incident the writer heard many years ago about some "Preaching to the poor" that made a great impression. I never learned the identity or name of the man who did the preaching. We will call him Mr. X. Understand he was a layman and business man who was very zealous in his Chri tian witnessing and testimony.

He got together several of his tikeminded friends to help with the music, and went out each Sunday afternoon and held a worship service in the little chapel on the County Pauper Farm. There were about 12 or 15 inmates One afternoon as they rode out to the service Mr. shocked and amused his friends by telling them he intended to start taking up a collection in every service, and urge these old and unfortunate people to get busy during the week and try and get a present for God every Sunday. They had gotten into the habit of always ex pec ting gifts with never the thought of giving beingpresented to them. He taught them Acts 20:35 havcyou ever learned it: "REMEMBER THE WORDS OF THE LORD JESUS, HOW HE SAID, IT WAS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE." They were urged to try and earn the money they gave, try to find a little job or work they could do, and tell they were trying to earn a little for a present for God every Sunday.

If unable to do this it was suggested get something to give by self denial with their allowance for snuff, smoking or chewing tobacco or something else. Mr. kept up passing the hat and this kind of teaching forqtiitea while withoutany apparent results. But he persevered and after awhile some began giving regularly. One man got so interested in making something to give that he brought in sizable gifts, and Mr.

suggested he tithe the amouril and save the rest. He did so, and the result was that he left the Pauper Farm, made a living and supported himself. Someone has truly said: "YOU CANT OUTGIVE GOD!" The above incident happened twoscore or more years ago. It came to pass before our Statesmen, and Politicians, and Preachers, and the Power of the Press, and Scholars "Fell in Love" with the Poor, the Paupers, and the Black Man, and gave them power to "Cast the ballot" regardless of their qualifications of character intelligence, integrity, etc. Now that great numbers of them have been promoted to "cast the ballot" many feel the freedom and liberty to "cast sticks and stones to break our bones," yea, and "cast bullets, pellets, buckshots, knives" yea, verily even "cast fire to burn up our cities, homes, industries, and what have you! It appears to us that Mr, faithfully "PREACHED THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR Get busy work, make something with which to honor and worship God.

the Sabbath Day to keep it holy: six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work." It appears to us that these preachers, politicians, professors, or what nots, who think they are "Preaching The Gospel to the Poor" by advocating the state guarantee every one a living regardless of their character or industry ought to be given the message the Apostle Peter gave (lie Sorcerer Simon: "They money perish with thee, because thou hast thought the gift of God may be purchased with rnon ev Thou hast not part nor lot in this matter; for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine hear! may be forgiven thee. For 1 perceive that thou are in the gall of bitterness, and in thebond oT iniquity." 23. Or it may be they need the probably more severe message the Apostle Paul delivered to another sorcerer. Elvmas.
