FREDERICK F. FISCHER, C. P. A Secretary. STORM BRINK SPECIAL PRICE veterans.

To be eligible for the disabil ity freeze, a person must have Social Security credit for at least five out of the ten years before he became disabled. One and a half years of this credit must have been in the three years before becoming disabled. Service Period Covered Because of the legislative ef forts of The American Legion, Social Security coverage has been authorized for World War II or Korean military service. Thus, the veteran may count as covered employment under Social Security any active mili tary service after September 19-10. In many instances, eligibility for Social Security can be established entirely on the basis of military service without any covered civilian employment.

If the veteran applies before June 30, 1957, his Social Secur ity recoro can be frozen as of the actual time the disability occurred as far back as October 1941. If he waits until after June 30, 1957, he may not qualify. Department Rehabilitation Chairman Thomas W. Byers of Thomaston calls the attention of war widows whose husbands died from service-connected causes to the fact that if they have not already done so, they should immediately take steps to apply for increased dependent's compensation under the Survivors Benefit Act of 1956. Sixty per cent of those persons eligible for increased compensation have not yet applied for increased compensation under this act.

Persons on the VA death com-pensation'rolls on Jan. 1, 1957, have the option of continuing to receive benefits under older laws or choosing to receive payments under the new act. Most widows will be entitled to more money under the new Survivors Benefit Act (P.L. 881), although those with several small children who are drawing servicemen's in demnity should wait until later to transfer to the new system. National Convention Children, where there is no widow, will do slightly better un der the new law, although here, too, The American Legion study indicates that the transfer to the new system should not be made as long as servicemen's indem nity is being paid.

Department Adjutant Parker received the following statement concerning- ihe 19a7 National Convention be held at Atlan tic City, New Jersey. "for the first time in history the storied Boardwalk at Atlan tic City will resound to the beat of the world's greatest parade when The American Legion 39th annual National Convention assembles in that city on Sept. 16-19. Following the new pattern initiated in Los Angeles last year, the parade will be held on Monday, September lb, netore the first business session of the convention. "Another first in Atlantic Cfty will be the staging of the "Tournament of Music." the National drum and bugle corps competition, indoors.

Site of the spec tacular contest will be the At lantic City Convention Hall, larg est indoor meeting place in the world. "National Commander W. C. 'Dan' Daniel has announced that the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall has been pickpd as the national headquarters hotel for the convention." To Forward Nominees Department Americanism Chairman Edward F. Lynch Jr of Waterbury, has asked that each post commander who has a nominee for the department Americanism Award to forward it without delay to department headquarters.
