Phone 242-5191 PAGE INSURANCE AGENCY, INC. 54 Crownview Mh Vernon, Illinois 62864 WASHINGTON (AP) — The government plans to offer 5 per cent interest on its new savings certificates, much to the ire of U\e savings and loan industrj-, the Washington Post reported today. President Johnson announced Sept. 21 that the government was considering a higher-interest savings lure as part of a drive to coax Americans into lending more money to fight the Viet Nam war. The Post said purchasers of the 5 per cent certificates first would have to purchase 4.15 per cent Series E savings bonds. Thus, yield on the over-all investment would be less than 5 per cent. Savings and loan institutions In many areas pay between 4% and 5 per cent on passboolc deposits, and slightly more on deposits which nvKt be left for a fixed period of time. Savings and loan institutions fear some of tlieir funds may be diverted to tlio government certificates. One effect of this would be less money available for home mortgages — already a tight market. VIETNAM (AHT- NO — Vietnamese farmers in the vicinity of Tuy Hoa, Vietnam, are harvesting their rice in peace this year. For this they can thank Sergeant David E. Moore, 27, son of Mr, and Mrs. Woodrow W. Moore. 605 Elm St., Fairfield, 111., and the other members of the 10th Aviation Battalion who participated in "Operation Seward." "Seward," which lasted nearly the entire month of October, was an operation with a dual mission: to insure the Vietnamese protection as they reaped their crops, and to deny the rice to the Viet Cong. Over 12,000 "sorties" were; flown by the battalion's pilots as they pushed the VC farther away from farmers who harvested 25,000 tons of rice, which they will keep this year. Sgt. Moore, assigned to thf^ battalion's Headquarters Company, entered on active duty in April 1956. He attended Fairfield High School, and completed his education through the General Edu- prograni.
