said. Police said Dr. Ragnar Toss, whose body was discovered in his office late Thursday, had committed suicide. But they declirted to reveal further details on the case Toss and writer Birgit Hedeby were convicted of manslaughter earlier this year for the mercy killing of Erik Handberg. a chronic multiple sclerosis sufferer.

Both Toss and Hedeby have appeals pending. The court that tried Toss and Hedeby was told during testimony that Handberg wanted to kill himself but' was too he issued written orders for Toss lo help him. The judge ruled Toss supplied insulin which Hedeby, an advocate of mercy killing who later "wrote a ijook orr -Hand' berg's death, administered in a fatal overdose to Handberg. The defense had claimed that assisting a suicide was not a crime. The.

Swedish Medical Association recently withdrew Toss's license to practice medicine.
