gUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1956. THE LOGANSPORT PRESS, LOGANSPORT, INDIANA PAGE FIFTEEN Again To Meet To Try To End Telephone Strike Firm Has Quit Service At Ohio City Because Of Violence By ART PARKS COLUMBUS, Ohio UP) Worried state officials- are looking hopefully toward scheduled resumption of negotiations Monday in the 90- day southern' Ohio telephone They are hoping privately that happens Monday to restore at least emergency service in the Portsmouth metropolitan area which has been sweating out a telephone 'blackout" since last Monday night. The State of Ohio has hammered at all sides of the hard-shelled telephone deadlock without finding a soft spot. And, as the fifth day passed with i the curtain of silence still hanging around Portsmouth, the state was reduced to the frustrating position of sitting and waiting and hoping. Through the state government among the people of the Portsmouth area themselves there was building up an undercurrent of fear of more violence, but with the outwardly expressed hope that the elusive "something" would happen to jerk the sputtering fuse out of jthe Portsmouth powder keg.

Resume Talks Mon. Negotiations between the struck Ohio Consolidated Telephone Co. and the striking Communications Workers of America are scheduled to resume Monday in Columbus with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service sitting in on the meeting. It will be the first session of contract talks since Oct. 11.

The state, in the meantime, has used every weapon at its command to bring about a truce- short of sending National Guard troops into the with no more luck than federal mediators have had. The 636 unionists on strike ar missing their pay since the strike started July but at least outwardly are deter mined to continue their fig against what they term a com pany effort "to starve us out." 5154 Jordan To Elect 40 To Parliament In Sunday Voting Country Could Finally Become A Satellite Of Nearby Iraq By WILTON WYNN AMMAN, Jordan living in an air of crisis, are electing a new 40-seat Parliament Sunday expected to call for abrogation of this desert king- don's treaty with Britain. The treaty is a defense alliance that his sustained proverty-strick- en Jordan since its birth 'as an independent nation 10 years ago. It gives Britain three military bases in Jordan. In return, the British pay 25 to 30 million dollars a year for the upkeep of once rated the Arab world's best; and promise to aid the Jordanians if they are attacked. Anti-Western elements among Jordan's 1,400,000 stirred up by increased Israeli frontier attacks and the rise of Egypt's President Nasser as a professed champion of Arab rights figure to gain so much ground that even moderate independents will be under heavy fire to join in cutting the last formal link with Britain.

Kings Are Cousins The election raised anew 'the question whether Jordan may eventually be tucked under the wing of Iraq, a Baghdad Pact member whose King Faisal II is a cousin of Jordan's 21-year-old King Hussein, or go to the Egyptian-Syrian-Saudi Arabian triumvirate headed by Nasser. A third of Jordan's population is made up of Arab, refugees of the Palestine War of 1948, an embittered group living on meager rations supplied by the United Nations. Politicians expect at least one Communist, Dr. Yacoub Ziadin, to win a seat. He is a highly popular physician.

Moderate independents probably will win a majority of seats, but anti-Western elements could use Parliament as a forum for up public opinion to force the independents into going along with the treaty abrogation demand.
