As there was mueh eomplaint against the grain buyers of Hiawatha last winter for not paying higher prices for corn, the present situation will justify a few words to show their side of the matter. Some of it has graded as "rejected" and much of it would, not come up to the requirements of that grade. The prices of damaged grain in Toledo is 13 cents less than No. 2.

and in St. Louis 11 cents less. The Chicago Daily Commercial Bulletin, a copy of which is before ns, says that "Country shippers should understand that it is useless to forward corn to this market unless it is in good condition. At present large quanities of this grain is being received here which has been exposed to the severe weather of the past winter and spring which is unfit for warehousing, and therefore must be sold for such figures as buyers are willing to pay there for, in many instances not sufficient to pay freight charges, The requirents for corn to grades "No 2 read: No. 2 eorn shall be dry, reasona bly clean, but not plump enough for Ne.

but the proportion is very small. difference of 13 cents per bushel makes loss of $65 per car. The experience of this season should teach farmers that if they want top priees for their grain, they must take care of it in a tip-top manner. Old grain dealers like Speer and Smith who have "been through he mill" and lost several fortunes, must look ahead in making contracts to provide some protection again? such losses as they are now sustaining. They know when the weather is telling on grain, and of eonrse.

will not pay the highest price for No. 2 corn, that when delivered will not grade. If our farmers will allow their corn to remain in the field under the snow or in uncovered cribs all winter, they cannot expect to get the highest prices for it. Horse Theif Captured. A young horse thief was arrested in this place, Wednesday, last week, and returned to Jackson County where he had committed the theft.

He arrived in the morning with a nice black mare, three years bid, worth about $80, and offered her for sale at Grundy's livery stable for $43. Mr. Grundy informed Sheriff Hunter of the matter and he sent telegrams to the sheriffs of several counties, making inquiries concerning the thief and mare but receiving no response. Mr. Grundy bought her, with the under standing that he was to take the fellow the next morning over to Mr.

Johnson's Mission Centre, for whom claimed bo working. A short timfj after the sale was made, the thief could not be found, and this convinced Mr. Grundy and the Sheriff that the mare was sto len property. They sent telegrams to head the thief off, and gave instructions to the train men at the depot tliat they would know. At Manville, the first sta tion east of here, the thief flagged the train and got on board, and at Robinson the conductor handed him over to the authorities.

Sheriff Hunter held him until Friday morning, when the Sheriff of Jackson county arrived in search of the mare and thief and took charge of him. The mare was one of a span of strays taken up and posted by a farmer of that county, and tho thief was a young man who was taken from the New York Orphan's Home, and raised by Drake of Holton. He had lately fallen into bad company and was drunk when he com mitted the theft. The new revision of the new testa ment has been received at the News Stand of W. L.
