S., according to the USDA crop reporting board. This is about the same number as last fall, though the goal set called for an increase of 10 per cent to solve impending meat shortages. Meanwhile the spring crop totaled 51,421,000 head, a decrease of 3 per cent from last spring. A pigs-saved-per-litter average of 6.44, 2nd largest on record, kept the decrease from being much greater although 8 per cent fewer sows farrowed in the 1948 spring season. Because of smaller numbers of hogs on June 1, the slaughter of hogs during the months of June through September probably will be smaller than last year. Adding this fact to smaller numbers in other livestock categories brings an answer of meat shortages and higher livestock prices. Iowa's spring farrowings in 1948 were only 1,707,000 compared to 1,962,000 last year. Fall farrowings, however, are expected to rise from 659,000 last year to 725,000 this year. The indication is that Iowa farmers will cash in on livestock shortages to a much greater extent than farmers of most other states. In fact, only 2 other states show larger percentage increases in indicated fall farrowings. No other state is even close to Iowa in total number of sows farrowing in either spring or .fall.
