CHESTER TR 2-331-4 WHIIEJHOMAS On November 1974, of 4445 HoWen Street, Services and burial will be In Dover, Delaware the convenience of the Arrangements by the CHRISTOPHER friends, an egocentric bunch of misfits, and to her eager-to-love daughter.

There's Jimmy, an actor who never quite makes the grade; Toby, whose a is preserving her beauty; Lou, would-be composer and insensitive lover. The only person strong enough to help Evy is 17- year-old Polly. Whether Evy -or any of them can cope with problems is the of "Gingerbread Lady." Simon's observant depiction of these touchingly dependent losers as they quarrel, scold, and comfort each other, makes for an entertaining play, with serious undertones. There's the shaky hope that is Toby's only lifeline, the small triumphs.that Jimmy must build into an existence, the illusiojn of talent which sustains Lou. the undertones come- through irregularly.

Cast and director James Hazard have not probed sufficiently the wellsprings, the motivations of these desperate people. It is hard to believe that Evy teeters on a narrow, icy rail and can spare no strength from her meager store to help her friends with their deep Doris French, a resourceful actress, plays her, tender-tough Evy sometimes comes over as confident, more annoyed and cold than tense and caring. John Becker gives us a a high voice, waving and a fright wig that asks for condescension. The small, but juicy part of the Puerto Rican grocery boy, which should be. funny, lively, and sexually completely flat, negating the explicit point Simon is trying to make about Evy.

However, thre are individual scenes (Polly with her mother, for instance, Jimmy counting out the grocery money, and Toby reciting her past conquests) which are poingnant or amusing or revealing. Karl Ratz, with a bit more flamboyance, would be just right as Lou Tanner. Suzanne Csanaday (Polly) has the makings of an appealing. ingenue. Blanche Cash gives Toby credibility.

Imaginative direction could make "Gingerbread Lady" a balanced, wise-cracking, but probing whole. The play will be presented again at 8:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday. -HOLLEY R. WEBSTER HAACP sets meeting MEDIA-The Media NAACP Branch will meet 7:30 p.m.
