or one brief moment it appeared this week that Rep rank Bow Ohio had uncovered material for another Borge show At House hearings on the US Educational and Cultural Exchange Program Bow was glancing down a long list of State Department grants made to American lecturers research scholars and professors over seas His eyes stopped at Italy Stopped and I imagine lit up for there he interpreted a $5185 grant to mean that the department was a professor out to lecture at the University of lorence on the history of seems to me the history of art in lorence Italy pretty ell Bow commenieu sagaciously ew Lines Later A few lines later his eyes came to another screeching halt This time Bow said he had spotted "someone at the University of lorence lecturing on Italian If Americans were being paid by the US government to lecture to the Italians about their own art and it was indeed worthy of Borge It turned out however that Bow was reading the wrong catego ry The grants he cited were made to Americans to study those subjects not lecture about them This setback apparently dis couraged Bow from continuing his inspection Which was rather unfortunate Down The List Had he read further down the list as I did he would have found an American giving lectures at the University of Naples on litera ls And when he came to the United Kingdom he would have discovered an American lectur ing on "English literature" In Spain an American with a $6845 grant has been lecturing on "linguistics and English as a foreign Meanwhile another American with an $8745 grant has been in Spain studying "linguistics and Eng lish as a foreign a pity they couldn't have gotten together "English as a foreign lan by the way was one of the most popular lectures on the list But for some strange I reason no
