6C Tuesday. June 23, 1 998 The HeraJd-Palladium Benton Harbor-St. Joseph SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN i'l f I -j r$ r r cit! Itaff gets 3 percent pay hike By ANDREW LERSTEN . H-P Soutft Haven Bureau BANGOR Bangor school administrators are getting a 3 percent salary increase, which is in line ith the raise the district's teachers will be getting. The school board Monday night voted to approve the pay raises for the administrators, in connection with their contract renewals for the 1998-99 school year, which starts July 1. Here are the new annual salaries for administrators: high school principal Jeff Melvin, S65.1 15; assistant high school principal Bob Gendron, $53,349; middle school principal Cindy Klebba, S61.582; assistant middle school principal Loren Pyle, $54,308; alternative and community education director Pat Conroy, S6I.883; South Walnut Elementary principal Sharon Chalker, S58.448; Primary School principal Maurice Scott, 558,448; and technology director Dan Vomastek, S52.023. The district traditionally grants pay raises to administrators consistent with raises given to the teacher's union, said Superintendent Jack Loudin. The board also voted to approve the district's 1998-99 budget calling for both revenues and expenditures of $10,764,000, up from the current fiscal year budget of $10.5 million. The district should not have to dip into its general fund reserves of $2.4 million in the coming year, and any fund surpluses would be used for district technology programs, Loudin said. The board has also formally declared its intent to use the $120,000 lump sum payment from the Durant state lawsuit settlement for wiring and other technology infrastructure projects in the district, Loudin said. The extra technology money is especially important now that the recent $13.55 million district bond issue was defeated by voters, Loudin said. Enu Claire schools SSI with Classifieds Phone 429-4484 1-800-356-4262 in MI 24-hour line 429-8344 Block scheduling ups honor roll numbers MARJORIE SNYDER H-P Correspondent EAU CLAIRE New block scheduling is contributing to more students making the honor roll at Eau Claire High School, Principal Robert Andrews believes. " "According to statistics, the usual number of students on the honor roll are about 25-30 percent of the students. This year ours went from 30 to about 50 percent," Andrews told the school board Monday night. Andrews said he credits the new block schedule with much of the progress. "Students have only four subjects at a time, opposed to about eight in traditional scheduling. That means the students can concentrate on less subjects at a time, and that has an effect on their grades," he said. Superintendent David Gray and Lybrook Elementary Principal Stefan Jaggi received pay raises designed to help bring them into line with other area school administrators. Gray's salary was increased by 6 percent to $68,000. He will receive a 3 percent increase during each of the following two years. Jaggi will receive a 6 percent boost to $54,000 in 1998-99, and 3 percent hikes the next two years, bringing his salary to $57,000 in 1999-2000, and $59,000 in 2000-2001. Jaggi also told the board he was surprised by Monday's first day of enrollment in the summer migrant education program. "Boy were we shocked!" Jaggi said. "We usually have 55-65 at the beginning of school, and today we had 1 1 7 come to school." 244 Classic Collector Cars 1979 M(l Midget Convertible. Excellent Condition. An autopsy was scheduled for today in Grand Rapids, he said. Robert Sommerfeldt Jr., 37, said he found the body shortly after 1:30 p.m. when he went to the pond to turn on the irrigation system. He said he saw the body face-up in the pond, turned right around and went and called the police. "I didn't hang around," Sommerfeldt said. Thcpolice "were there real quick, too." Sommerfeldt also discovered a body on the farm a couple years ago. That turned out to be the body of a drug deal victim from Grand Rapids. "I'm looking over my shoulder a lot," Sommerfeldt said this morning. "It's a real weird feeling to go to do your daily job and stumble across this stuff. It's a shock, let me tell you." Police: Missing mother, girls found hpadv BRYAN, Ohio ( AP) A woman accused of leaving Michigan with her two daughters three years ago to avoid kidnapping charges has been arrested, the FBI said today. Agents arrested Michelle Lee Abraham, 28, in Bryan early Sunday after the FBI in Detroit received a tip, Toledo FBI agent Steve Medlin said. She was being held in the Lucas County jail pending an appearance before a U.S. magistrate on federal charges of traveling across state lines to avoid prosecution on the Michigan kidnapping charges, he said. Her daughters, Chrystal DiDonato, 9, and Jessica Abraham, 4, had been missing since August 1995 when their mother allegedly failed to return them to their respective fathers after a scheduled visit in Michigan. Ronald DiDonato was granted custody of Chrystal in the couple's divorce in 1992. His wife, Janice DiDonato, said the couple expect to be reunited with Chrystal this week. The couple lives in Englewood, Fla. Ms. Abraham could be extradited to St. Clair County, Michigan, where she is wanted by the county prosecutor's office on two felony counts of parental kidnapping, Medlin said. The girls were turned over to the Williams County human services department after their mother's arrest. Authorities were not sure how long the family had been living in Bryan, about 50 miles west of Toledo, .
