Time* Herald, Carroll, la. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1970 ROLLS IN STOCK SHHHHH A serious Santa sits in solitude, sizing up the seasonal situation. Seems that soon it will be Christmas and there's so much to be done — the little folks' letters to read, finish and pack the toys, groom the reindeer, plan the delivery route! He's serious now, but come Christmas Eve and his eyes, how they'll twinkle, and his mouth will be drawn up like a bow! If you listen, you may hear him exclaim as he drives out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!" PARKWAY Zampognari Dying Breed By DENNIS REDMONT (Associated Press Writer) ROME (AP) — One hundred years ago, the Pope would have received them in the splendor of the Vatican. Now, the "Zampognari" — the popular mountain shepherd bagpipers — still wear their sheep and goatskin costumes from head to toe. But they often sleep in the streets and roam the streets of Rome begging for a coin. The bagpipers are a dying breed. Once, Rome, Naples and other southern Italian cities were invaded by hundreds of shepherds from the Abruzzi mountains, who came to play their popular nasal Christmas tunes come the beginning of December. On Christmas Eve, they mobbed St. Peter's Square and were blessed by the Pope or were received in one of the Vatican palaces. They brought a lamb or two, and presents of mountain cheese and ham. The Zampognari sometimes can make 40 or 50 dollars daily — considerably higher than their pay during the eleven other months of the year. They stay in Rome or Naples for about a month — from the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, until Epiphany, Jan. 6. Epiphany, or "D Giorno Delia Befana" (witch day), was once a more important feast than Christmas when most children got their presents from the good-humored witch. Now, it marks the departure of the "Zampognari," their pockets full of money, dragging their sheepskin bagpipes, and their dust-filled sheepskin boots. Nowadays, the bagpipers are better organized, but come in smaller numbers at Christmas time. Each group carves out a section of Rome, and methodically walk the streets, waiting for Romans to toss coins from their balconies. It's Different and Beautiful You can quickly make your own Cathedral "stained glass" window in your home! Just take jewel-colored cellophane and cut into many shapes. Apply to a clear glass door or window with rubber cement or sticky tape. Let your imagination wander with the subject and shapes that please you. The materials are very inexpensive and if you make a mistake, just start over again! By crinkling the cellophane you get a textured look of pebbled glass! { FANTASTIC CARPET OVERSTOCK SALE 135 ROLLS ON THE BARGAIN BLOCK!
