The whole business portion of the city is in ashes, from Harrison street north to Chicago avenue, and east oi the river to avenue, tbiee miles ia length and a mile to a mile and a half in width. Every hotel, bank, express, telegraph, and nrws- paper office, together with many thousand with the water works were destroyed erfv morning. The only salvation for the remainder of the city in the wind keeping ita present direction. 1'iJty thousand peopla aie homeless.

Most oi them are in a destitute condition The nnbtuoed streets for mileu are linec with household goods. No one dare think what the loss of life may bo. The flames swept through the city with the rapidity of a prairie fire, acd many mast have perished. The Western Union Telegraph has succeeded ia getting np a few wires from a hastily improvised office in the southern part of oity, establishing communication ia oearly all directions. Munificent offers oi assistance aie coming from every quarter.

ISVEXING KEJ'OET CHICA6O, Oct. 9. The awful work of destruction goes on with relentless farv from Harrison street, south, to Division street, north, and from the river to lake, area of four miles long by one wide, tbe names have swept iverything them. It is estimated at least one hundred thousand people are and in suffering condition The streets in the districts still nnbnmec are lined for miles with such household jooda as have been saved from destrnc Most generous offers of assistance, in coney, food, or anything wanted, com ng from every oity and town possible to by telegraph. The rnsyor has re- iponded to several offers, asking tbat looked food be forwarded as toon Firemen are on the way here from Gin dnnati, St.

The water works are entirely destroyed fhey are now blowing up buildings on he line ol the fire to attempt to arrest the oi the II It is now believed tbe spread of the fire las been stopped at Harrison street, but the north side there is no diminution its fury, and tbat entire division of the ity is evidently doomed to utter destrnc- ion, and there are grave fears that the may sprtadL to the west side of the branch ol tbe river, and the iohabi- ants of the streets nearest the river are Iready moving to places of supposed reater safety. Tha Western Union Telegraph Corn- any have COT six wires working east nd south, and running a temporitry offija 3 the corner of State and Sixteenth Northwestern road is running rains on both its branches, which are rowded with fiaeing citizens. It is now positively asserted by sorca lat the water-works are still intact, bat 39 water has shut o2 from the jnth and west divisions on account of ie quantity being used on the north A reliable gentleman, just arrived, the North brings the joy- il intelligence that the water-works are niojured. God grant it may prove true, It is impossible now to give even an ap- roximatuly correct statement ol the losses, at faint idea may be formed when it is that every bank in in the oity, ex- ipiing two small savings institutions, if on Twentieth and South Division, and ie on Randolph, are destroyed.

All the holesile stores and all large retail estab- tbmeats, the post-office, court-house, lumber of commerce, and every hotel in South Division except the Michigan venue Hotel, which stands on the ex- erne southern limit of the fire, which oapod, though badly scorched; every jwapaper offioe, the Tribune bnilding, ipposed to be fire- proof, finally sac- imbed, every theatre, six oi the largntt tutors, tha immense depots ol the Miohi- Southern And Illinois Central rail- adu, both passenger and freight depots the latter, more than a score of churches id mnab. of the shipping in the river have destroyed. Men who wero millionaires yesterday orning are neatly penniless, but more rrible than all is the awlnl certainty at muy human beings have found fiery avei; how mar.y no one now can tell perhaps no one can ever tell--bat some known to havs perished, and there is a art-sickening fear that the victims ol fisry monster may be counted by jres. ol horses and cows been burned in their and on north side a cumber, though released confinement, bewildered and con- wd by the sea cf fire which surrounded em, rushed wildly to and fro, uttering IP" ol fright and pain, until scorched and Jed. attempt at description of the scanea this appalling calamity would be idle.

AU the newspaper establishments are wiped out. The Tribune bnilding resisted the fire lor several hours, but finally yielded, when MoVioker's theatre, immediately adjoining, withstood the ratling element, bnt finally succumbed. In faet, all the buildings in the district which claimed to be fire proof, share the fate of thoie which could make no such olalmr. The great Central depot at the foot of Like street became a heap of ruins about nine o'clock. Most of the passenger cars of the Michigan Central, Burlington Quinoy and Illinois Central were moved on the breakwater and saved.

West oi Clark street, in tbe southern division, tbe fire extandnd south as far ss Polk street, sweeping everything before it The distance burned over here is some three Jocks wide and over half a mile in length, numbering about twenty blocks. The buildings were generally ol the cheaper character, embracing saloons, small shops xor etc. The distance buraed iver on the west side commences at Taylor street, running from Dekover to Jefferson, thence four of fire blocks north snd then moved diagonally towards the river, and finally the west line was established on Clinton street, and reaching thence to river streiit and moved in this line northward until it reoobed the North' western west side where it stopped, a distance of two miles from where it started. Almost the entire nortnern division from the nuin branoh and Chicago river to Lincoln Park, nearly two milea in length and one mile wide, is completely destroyed including tbe water works, a large number of elegant churches, etc. This statement embraces the districts devastated, and embraces almost tho entire business portion of the city. Harrison street, in the Sooth Division, the streets, reaching out many miles and covered almost entirely with dwellings com- pesed largely of the more elegant class are untouched, and may now be regarded as sife from injury. For miles and miles in every direction the sidewalks, lawnp, vacant lots, and fronts of dwellings are filled with people who have escaped t'rom these burning dwellings, taking with them only a very amount oi furniture and clothing. The sight is truly pitiful and harrowing.

They must receive immediate relief, or many from exposure and starvation, will perish. Of course, as stated in my previous dispatch, it is utterly impossible to make an approximate- oe- timateof the entire loss, but it can scarcely fall below $150,000,000.
