President Elienhower winds up the old yew today by putting torn* finishing touches en his propouls for Congress in the year to come. He scheduled an appointment at his Gettysburg farm with chief aide Wilton 8. Persona and speeehwriter Malcolm Moos to work on a draft of the State of the Union message he plans to deliver to Congress personally Jan. & Otherwise, his New Year's five involved not much more than a family get-together, Maj. John 8. Eisenhower, the President's son, is joining the chief executive and the First Lady. The President's daughter- in-law and three of the four grand* children are accompanying John, who is serving as a White House assistant. The eldest grandchild, 10-year- old David, is already here. The White House announced that the chief executivt would return to the Whit* House briefly Saturday for a ceremonial signing of a proclamation making Alaska the 49th state. He also will unveil a new 49-star flag. Safety Council Estimates 390 Road Victims CHICAGO (AP) - The National Safety Council estimates 390 Americans may die in traffic ac- cidenta during the four-day New Year holiday and 11,000 other persons may suffered disabling accidents. The council figured 350 traffic \ deaths would occur during a non- holiday period of equal length. The 102-hour New Year holiday period runs from 6 p.m. local time Wednesday to midnight Sunday, Jan. 4. The record traffic toll for a New .Year holiday Is 409, set in a four- day period at the end of 1956 and | beginning of 1957. During the recent Christmas four - day period 594 highway deaths were counted by The Associated Press. The council made » pre-Christmas estimate of 620. 5 DAY FORECAST Minnesota: Temperatures will average 5-10 degrees above normal; normal maximums 17 north to 24 south and normal minimuras 1 below north to 7 above south; generally mild until turning colder about Sunday; little if any precipitation southern portion occa - sional light snow northern portion averaging about .10 of an inch.
