18 SYRACUSE POST STANDARD, April 28, 1975 For anvone visiting New York City during the next few weeks, there is a veritable treasure trove of riches. Even in an era of economic instability and monetary crisis, the more prestigious galleries seem to be enjoying enormous popularity and volume of sales are at high levels. This viewer comes to certain conclusions after visiting five museums and 20 plus galleries in a recent visit. There are some singularly outstanding one man shows in New York at present covering a wide spectrum of stylistic approaches. There is also a heavy accent on new realism, neorealism, Wyeth like real ism or the return to figuration.

The most prestigious and wealthiest of the private gal leries are mounting superb ret rospective exhibitions or the imatic exhibitions that would do justice to major museum shows. Starting with one man shows, the Francis Bacon exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, consisting of works created since 1968, is most impressive. A controversial fig urative painter whose 20th cen iury anxiety is difficult for Tnany viewers to empathize with, he is nonetheless one of the most evocative and compelling painters of this centu ry. Certainly, he is England's most personal and outstanding painter. The exhibition remains on view at the Met Metropolitan Museum through June 29. In an entirely different figurative vein, one of America's contemporary "old masters," Isabel Bishop, is the recipient of a magnificent exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints which opened recently at the Whitney Museum of American Art (Madison Avenue at 75th Street) through May. Her feelings for the human female figure in various stances and strides were created originally in low keyed beautifully constructed paintings of incredible beauty. From the pearly, opalescent, early works to the monumen tality of mid period works to the richly interwoven color depicting figures moving and interwoven with space, Isabel Bishop is the consummate artist who has never followed fads or fashions but instead has been consistent in her growth in handling the human figure with a calmness and a beauty that is coupled with magnificent paint handling and breathtaking honesty. An outstanding exhibition of Picasso's work of various peri ods and one of the largest retrospective exhibits since his death is the current show at Aquavella Gallery.

Countless exhibits of varying forms of realism are shown at Hammer Galleries with the Timberiake exhibition, the Reeve Schley and John Maning exhibition at Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison along with shows at Hirschl and Ad ler and the David Parrish Show at Janis Gallery, 6 W. 57th St. and work at Coe Kerr Gallery at 49 E. 82nd all are representative of the recent accent on landscape, still life and the figure done in a conservative vein with almost magic realist or photo realist overtones. From the Peales to Picasso, from Redon, Roesen, Pissaro, Fantin Latour, Morandi, Renoir and even Andrew Wyeth, this magnificent exhibition also features works of Soutine, Braque, Monticelli, Courbet, Monet, Matisse and VanGogh.
