SV Players Selected Syracuse University seniors Lonnie Aligood, far left, Keith Moody, center, and Ray Preston were all chosen in the NFL's annual college draft yesterday.

Aligood, SU's leading receiver last fall, went to the Cincinnati Bengals on the For SU Trio By TOM BATZOLD After nervously waiting in vain on Thursday, three Syracuse University football players Lonnie Aligood, Keith Moody and Ray Preston were all happy to be se lected yesterday in the National Football League's annual college draft. Aligood, a wide receiver, was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals on the ninth round: Moody, a defensive back, went to the Buffalo Bills on the 10th round: and Preston, an Ail American linebacker, had to wait until the 11th round, when he was selected by the San Diego Chargers. "Waiting around was the worst part of it (draft)." Aligood said. "We'd be sitting around waiting and whenever the phone would ring, somebody would jump. And every time, it wasn't the call we were waiting Aligood, a 6 1, 189 pounder from Red Bank, N.J., was SU's leading receiver last fall, grabbing 27 catches for 477 yards.

He was the second wide receiver chosen in the draft by the Bengals, who took Oklahoma's Billy Brooks in the opening round. For Moody, a graduate of Nottingham High, being selected in the NFL draft was ninth round; Moody, a defensive back from Nottingham High, was chosen by the Buffalo Bills on the 10th; and Ray Preston, an All American linebacker, did not go until San Diego selected him on the 11th round. Waiting's Worst Part' the fulfillment of a dream he once thought would never materialize. When his mother died several years ago, he quit school to support his brother, three sisters and his own daughter, but returned to SU two years ago at the urging of his wife. "I'm very, very happy the way things have worked out," Moody said.

"Buffalo is perfect, it's close to home and if I were to make the team, all my friends and relatives would be able to come to the games. "I may have a better chance in the defensive secondary at a place like Buffalo, rather than somewhere like Dallas or Minnesota. I'm just happy about the whole situation, period." Ironically, Preston, the most publicized Syracuse player last season was the last of the three to be chosen. As he sat around waiting for the phone to ring, he wondered if he was even going to be selected at all. "It was discouraging, really." he said.

"When 1 saw (Texas A and M's Ed) Sirnoni ni. fPenn State's Greg) Buttle and (Dartmouth's) Reggie Williams go on the third round. I was expecting to go soon after that." What took so long? "My agent called me and told me there was an injury prone rap going around against me. I think that's a lot of bunk. I was able to play with injuries at Syracuse.

"But that's over Preston said. "I got what I really wanted the chance to make a team. It won't be easy. San Diego took two other linebackers Don Horn of Oregon State and Woodrow Lowe of Alabama. I'll just have to go out there and prove myself all over again." Gamble Inks Yanks' Pact MILWAUKEE (AP) Outfielder Oscar Gamble, obtained in an off season trade with the Cleveland Indians, signed his 1976 contract with the New York Yankees Friday.

Gamble, currently sharing the right field job with Lou Piniella, was the biggest victim of New York owner George Steinbrenner's hair edict during spring training. After Steinbrenner issued his order. The Redskins, who often use their draft picks as trade bait for veteran players, chose Quinn Buckner of Indiana and Wayman Britt of Michigan, who opposed each other in last month's NCAA basketball championship. Britt was picked as a defensive back and wide receiver on the 13th round and Buckner was picked as a defensive back on the next round. Britt did not play football at Michigan but Buckner was an All Big 10 safety as a freshman at Indiana. He quit football after two years to concentrate on basketball. San Diego also went for a basketball player, choosing Oregon's Ron tee, most valuable player in the 1974 National Invitation Tournament.

Lee, a second team All American, was Oregon's all time scoring leader and was chosen as a defensive back by the Chargers. The trend towards non football players started early in the draft's second day. Seattle opened the day with the first selection in the eighth round and chose Larry Shipp, identifying him as a wide receiver from Louisiana State. Shipp is from Louisiana State all right, but he hasn't played football since high school. Shipp is a world class hurdler who won the NCAA 120 yard high hurdles championship last spring.

He has a 13.6 time, one of the best clockings in the world, in the 110 meter hurdles and is expected to compete for the U.S. Olympic team in Montreal this summer. The eighth round also produced three choices who have pro football heritages. New Orleans chose defensive back Craig Cassady from Ohio State. Cassady is the son of former Heisman Trophy winner Howard "Hopalong" Cassady, a pro star with the Detroit Lions.

Then the New York Jets went for Louie Giarnmona, a running back from Utah State, who once was advised by his uncle that he was too small to be a major college running back. Giarnmona ignored the advice and led the nation in ONONDAGA HILL Thorpe Uwimiowor Srr. If the name Is familiar, that's because two of his big brothers, Merlin and Phil Olsen, have preceded him in the pros. Ten drafting rounds were scheduled for Friday as bleary eyed representatives of the 28 NFL clubs continued to work their way towards the target of 487 draft selections. The clubs had completed seven rounds Thursday, using 14 hours, four minutes and finishing up just after midnight. They were back at work at 10 A.M. EST, Two of Washington's early picks were widely separated geographically.

The Redskins made a rare Canadian collegiate selection, choosing wide receiver Brian Fryer from the University of Alberta, and then changed compass direc ions, picking center Curtis kins of the University of waii. There were several minor trades involving draft choices. Denver sent defensive back Jeff Severson to St. Louis for a ninth round choice and selected Jimmy Lisko. a linebacker from Arkansas State.

Buffalo sent tackle Halvor Hagen to San Diego for a ninth round pick and took Jeff Turner, a linebacker from Kansas. New England swapped center Doug Dumler to Minnesota for an eighth round pick this vear and a No. 6 in 1977. The Patriots used the current choice to draft Stu Betts, a running back from Northern Michigan. The Jets also became the first team in draft history to pick twin brothers on consecutive selections.

That happened in the 12th round when New York chose wide receiver Don Buckey of North Carolina State and then exchanged draft places with Philadelphia in order to make the next selection Buckey's twin brother. Dave, a quarterback. Both Buckeys played under new Jets Coach Lou Holti at N.C. State. The twins were the second pair of brothers to be selected in the 1976 draft.

On Thursday, Tampa Bay made Oklahoma defensive tackle Leroy Selmon the draft's No. 1 selection and then picked his brother, Dewey on the second round. The Buckeys, however, were not quite as well known as the Selmons.
