Coach Mike Sherman said Patterson, a sophomore who started every game and had 34 tackles, will undergo surgery today.

NICH0LLS STATE 10 Bobcats paddle past Colonels Texas State tied for first in Southland By Bill Harrison A.WHCANTA'reSMAN CORESPONDENT SAN MARCOS Feel-good stories abounded Saturday for Texas State, which overpowered Nicholls State 34-10 in the Bobcats' home finale. But the best story could still be up in the air. After McNeese State downed Northwestern State 24-17, Texas State stood tied with McNeese atop the Southland Conference standings. Because they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cowboys, the Bobcats can win the Southland title and a trip to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs by beating Sam Houston State on Saturday in Huntsville. In the 11th year of the "Battle for the Paddle" commemorating the game postponed by the 1998 Central Texas flood the Bobcats (7-4, 4-2) avenged three straight losses to the Colonels (2-6, 2-4).

After their 21-19 win in 2006, Nicholls State players scooted across midfield on their rear ends, mimicking paddling over the Bobcats' logo. This year, it was the Bobcats' turn to paddle across the field at game's end. "That was three years coming," said junior defensive end Travis Houston, who was a one-man wrecking crew with 12 tackles, three or loss, two fumble recoveries and the Bobcats' lone sack. "We practiced that as freshman, when I first got here," Houston said. "I don't know how it looked, but it felt great." The Bobcats' defense throttled the Colonels, whose triple-option attack yielded just 118 yards and 2.7 yards per carry.

Nicholls State didn't reach the end zone until midway through the third quarter. Houston's fumble recoveries in the second quarter nullified two straight Colonels drives, and the Bobcats' offense pounced on both, blowing open a 3-3 deadlock. First, senior receiver Cameron Luke grabbed his 16th touchdown catch, a 26-yarder from Bradley George. Luke beat safety Lardarius Webb, who's considered a high-round NFL draft prospect. Senior running back Stan Zwinggi, out two games because of an injury, bulled through Webb and Jamal Simmons at the goal line, scoring from five yards out for a 17-3 lead.

Tight end John Gilley, a 6-foot-3-inch, 264-pound fifth-year senior scored his first career touchdown in the third quarter, leaping to grab a 14-yard lob from George. "It felt great and scary at the same time," Gilley said. "I just said a little prayer." Bears' White from an Aggie family Baylor wide receiver Thomas White, who caught three passes for 70 yards, including a 55-yard scoring bomb from Griffin, comes from a family that includes several Aggies. In fact, White noted, his uncle dressed for the game in a maroon sweater. Senior Bears celebrate home finale seniors were both emotional and reflective after their final game at home the Bears close the season Nov.

29 at Texas Tech. "It's a really passionate feeling that I really can't explain," said left tackle Jason Smith. "It's something from within." Smith, an all-star candidate who probably will be a high draft pick, said playing with the mercurial Robert Griffin is something he'll long remember. "I'm happy that I can have one more game with him," Smith said. "I'll be able to always say I played for him and blocked for him.

I want there to be a standard that he sets for the team." "But by about the third quarter, it was zipped up under a black jacket," White said. Brown's 8th freshman to start started its eighth true freshman of the season when Eddie Brown got the call at defensive tackle ahead of Patterson. Brown was credited with four tackles. Captain honor serves Lane well senior running back Jorvorskie Lane was named a game captain for the first time in his career and responded with his first multi-touchdown game since scoring four times last year at Nebraska. Lane scored twice on 1-yard runs to extend his school career touchdown records to 48 rushing and 49 total.

Randy Riggs Johnson earns TD pass record When he tossed a 5-yard scoring strike to Jeff Fuller, quarterback Jerrod Johnson moved ahead of Gary Kubiak arid Dustin Long and set the school record with his 20th touchdown pass of the season. Of course, that scoring pass made the score 41-21, Baylor, so neither Johnson nor the Aggies felt much like celebrating. Bears dominate in fourth victory in Big 12 South history By Randy Riggs AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF WACO Each time Baylor wins a football game, Art Briles tosses his cap to the fans in the student section. If the Bears keep this up, their first-year coach might have to scrounge around in his closet for some more hats before much longer. "Nah," Briles said after Baylor demolished Texas 41-21 at Floyd Casey Stadium, "we'll have plenty of hats.

That won't be a problem." Freshman quarterback Robr ert Griffin and a rejuvenated defense saw to it that problems were scarce for the Bears on Saturday. In dominating on both sides of the ball, Baylor beat the Aggies for only the second time in Big 12 history and earned the tiebreaker over them in its bid to avoid the South Division cellar for just the second time. Both teams now are 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the league with one game remaining. But, at least on this day, the difference in talent level between the Aggies and Bears was Grand Canyon-esque in scope. With Griffin passing for two touchdowns and directing an offense that amassed 510 yards, the Bears outgained by 202 yards.

Against what was, statistically, the nation's 96th-ranked defense, managed only 14 first downs, 64 rushing yards and seven meaningful points, excluding two so-what touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jerrod Johnson threw four interceptions and lost a fumble, while the Bears committed no turnovers. Bears linebacker Joe Pawelek had two interceptions, giving him six for the season. "It's hard to beat anybody when you turn the ball over five times," Johnson said. "It was real disappointing." Not for the Bears.

They notched their first victory over a Big 12 South team since 2005 over Oklahoma State the only other time they finished out of the basement. It was just their fourth victory against a South team in the league's 13-year history. "I think it gives us some credibility as a football program," Briles said. "If they have 'Texas' in their name, we need to beat them. That's just the way it is.

"We feel great about today," he added. "We feel like we are close to being a really good BIG 12 FOOTBALL -ROUNDUP Missouri Daniel is hot on a chilly night as Tigers win North ASSOCIATED PRESS AMES, Iowa Chase Daniel threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns, and 12th-ranked Missouri clinched the Big 12 North and a spot in the conference championship game by crushing Iowa State 52-20 Saturday night. The Tigers' opponent is still anyone's guess, with Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma al still in the mix in the South. Swirling winds and temperatures in the high 20s had little effect on Daniel and Missouri's high-flying offense. Daniel went 32 of 40 and completed his first 16 passes as the Tigers (9-2, 5-2 Big 12) jumped out to a 31-7 halftone lead.

Derrick Washington rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns and Jeremy Maclin caught eight passes for 103 yards and a score for Missouri, which has won four straight. Missouri's victory also means that the Nov. 29 showdown at Arrowhead Stadium against Kansas will be mostly for pride, rather than the de facto North title game it appeared it could be in August. Austen Arnaud threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa State (2-9, 0-7), setting a school record with 36 completions. Gene Chizik's Cyclones have lost nine straight.

Missouri was nearly perfect in the first half, scoring on five of six possessions to go ahead 31-7. Tony Gutierrez associated press interceptions, for a total of six ter after matters had long been decided. Baylor's manhandling of his offense topped a long list of disappointments for coach Mike Sherman. "I thought our offense would have been more functional in the game and keep our defense off the field," he said after the Aggies officially were eliminated from bowl contention. When they weren't forcing turnovers, the Bears were forcing Justin Brantly to punt.

The punter was about the only bright spot for the Aggies. All four of his kicks were into the teeth of a strong northerly wind, but Brantly still managed a 41.8-yard average. He had a 51-yarder that was downed at the 1-yard line. But the Bears promptly drove 99 yards on nine plays, with Jay Finley zipping through right tackle for the final 12 yards to give Baylor a 34-7 lead late in the third quarter. Finley rushed for 116 yards three shy of his career high while Griffin added 56.

Fin-ley's backup, Jacoby Jones, added 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns on last-second option pitches from Griffin. It marked second straight blowout loss, coming on the heels of a 66-28 loss to Oklahoma. "Before the Oklahoma game I thought we were making progress," Sherman said. "We just have to learn how to continually play at the level we played at today for 314 quarters." Baylor's 41 points were its cruises back to title game which had been playing fairly respectably.

It was 41-7 before the Aggies scored twice in the final S'A minutes. Johnson threw for 244 yards on 19-of-30 accuracy, but 95 of them came in the fourth quar- 11 carries, and Robinson ran 15 times for 61 yards. He also completed 15 of 23 passes. Colorado caught a big break to keep things interesting. On fourth-and-9 from the Cowboys 28, Cody Hawkins' pass hit wide receiver Cody Crawford's left shoulder pad at the 15-yard line and bounced high toward the end zone, where alert wide receiver Scotty McKnight cradled it as he fell across the goal line to pull the Buffs to 20-10.

But Robinson drove the Cowboys 80 yards in eight plays for a 27-10 lead. Nebraska 56, Kansas State 28: Joe Ganz accounted for 365 total yards and four touchdowns, and the Cornhuskers (7-4, 4-3) manhandled the Wildcats (4-7, 1-6) in Manhattan, Kan. Nebraska also punished K-State at the line of scrimmage for 340 yards and four touchdowns rushing. The Huskers rolled up 610 total yards. Ganz had 270 yards passing and two touchdowns on 16 of 25 after his first attempt of the game was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.

He also had 95 yards rushing on 11 carries, scoring on runs of 25 and 14 yards in the fourth quarter. The Cornhuskers harassed K-State quarterback Josh Freeman from the opening snap and completely squashed the Wildcats' running game. Freeman, the nation's 13th-ranked passer at 292 yards per game, faced constant pressure and was sacked five times. He threw for just 114 yards before being replaced. K-State had a dismal 59 yards rushing 011 32 carries.

most in conference play this season, its third-highest total in the 105-game series and most against the Aggies since 1980. But the game's biggest surprise was how the Bears totally stifled offense, in at the hands of No. 2 Texas Tech, the Cowboys got off to another slow start, settling for chip-shot field goals on their first two drives, an early warning sign that this wouldn't be another offensive onslaught. Oklahoma State built a 20-3 lead on Dez Bryant's 29-yard touchdown catch before half-time and Kendall Hunter's 43-yard TD run in the third quarter. 4 Hunter ran for 102 yards on WKJt Wjt0 i 'A- A Charlie Niebergall associated press Missouri's Derrick Washington (24) looks to break away from Iowa State defenders Brandon Hunley (20) and Fred Garrin (43).
