16 July 20, _ 1948 ««•••» <?'*? Gl»b«-Gmi««e, Mftien City, U. Dangerously Close — Three Important insurance Deadlines Coming Up Soon By MAJ. THOMAS M. NIAL We're getting dangerously close to 3 important deadlines. Two of these come the last day of this month (July). The 3rd arrives Aug. 31. The 'July 31 deadlines have to do with insurance. The other is the deadline for applying for terminal leave pay. That is the one we'll discuss first. It only concerns veterans discharged before Aug. 31, 1946, the date the armed forces leave act VETERANS' GUIDE became law. All veterans discharged before that time must apply for their terminal leave pay before midnight Aug. 31, or they'll never get it. Those discharged after that time automatically got theirs. Application Blanks Postoffices are supposed to have application blanks, officially called "Claim for Settlement—Unused Leave." Money to Loan 8 I checked my own postoffice and found that it still has them in stock and that veterans are still coming in to pick them up. Once you get the blank it's smooth sailing. Instructions for filling it out are on the back. Also listed on the back are the places to which the application should be sent after it's been filled in. The application for terminal leave must be postmarked by midnight Aug. 31. Any later than that and you'll get no terminal leave pay—unless congress decides to extend the time limit again. It's doubtful that it will. Two Deadlines July 31 One of the insurance deadlines Is important to ex-servicers who have allowed their NSLI to lapse, no matter when that may have been. After the deadline (July 31) it'll be more than twice as hard to reinstate. Here's how it works. The basic NSLI act permits veterans to reinstate their insurance without a physical exam provided they can sign a statement saying their health is as good on reinstating as it was when the insurance lapsed. But this may be done only within 3 months of the date of lapse! After that you have to pass a physical exam. A long time ago congress told the VA it could set a date and allow veterans to reinstate their insurance, no matter how long it had lapsed, simply by signing the comparative health statement. This was done to allow the millions of lapsed policies to be put back in force with a minimum of difficulty on the part of the veteran. It's been, you might say, a grace period. No Extension The date marking the close of this grace period has already been extended several times. It won't be extended again. It runs out for good the last day of this month. So if your term insurance is not in force—if you quit paying premiums a year ago or 3 years ago— you can reinstate simply by: 1. Signing a statement that your health is as good today as it was when your insurance lapsed. 2. Paying 2 months' premiums at the same rate you were paying when your insurance lapsed. There is, of course, a stock form for this. You can get it at any VA office and at most veterans' org a n i z a tions headquarters and posts. You fill it in (it doesn't have to be notarized) and send it to your branch office. This is your best chance to latch on to a very good investment. The 3rd deadline will have to wait till next time. H elping the omema ker By Cecily Brownstone WEEK DAY 'DINNER Panfried Fish Fillets Buttered New Potatoes Creamed Mixed Vegetables Spiced Beets and Onion Rings on Salad Greens Bread and Butter Sliced Peaches Beverage Creamed Mixed Vegetables 1£ cups medium white sauce 1 tablespoon finely grated onion 3 cups cooked vegetables such as snap beans, celery, carrots, peas, squash. Salt and pepper to taste Buttered bread crumbs, i£ desired. Add the finely grated onion to the white sauce in a saucepan; mix well. Add cooked vegetables, either leftover or freshly cooked and cut in uniform sizes when possible. (If there is any cooking water from vegetables it may be used in making the white sauce, substituting it for one-half the usual amount of milk). Add salt and pepper to taste and heat over moderate heat, stirring /a few times. If desired the vegetables and cream sauce may be turned into a casserole, sprinkled with buttered crumbs and reheated under the broiler or in the oven. To make the buttered crumbs melt 2 tablespoons of butter or margarine in a skillet, add i cup fine dry bread crumbs and stir together. Makes 6 servings. Discharged Sailor Home at Swea City LOANS.
