MERCANTILE COMPANY Fourth of July Visitors. On Tuesday morning, the streets of Caldwell were made pictnresqne and lively by the appearance of numerous dusky forms, male and female, clothed in femi-military attire. On inquiring it was that they were young people belonging to varioua Indian tribes in the Territory who had been attending the Indian training school at Carlisle, Pa. Consulting the register of the Leland Hotel, we learned that the party were, on their way home, to spend a short vacation, under charge of Lieut. Mason D.

Pratt, and for the benefit of the readers of the Commebcial we give the list of names as put down upon Sam Woodson's book UIIAS. 1UIUME, Caldwell, Kannu. Peter Clarke J. A. IWIBLUJA i- Our great national holiday was very tamely welcomed in Caldwell. No ringing anvils, booming canon nor even the spiteful, vicious snap of the firecracker announced the arrival of the nation's birth-day. The previous night had been close and sultry, but the dark clouds to the north of us gave evidence that a severe rain storm was raging.

Its effect was felt on the glorious Fourth in a lower temperature and an air soft and as the traditional May day. Several of our citizens went up to Wellington in order to assist our county seat friends in properly celebrating the day but those who remained at home contented themselves with, doing such work as necessity required with as little labor as possible. Even the ordinarily exuberant and irrepressible boy wore a subdued air, and never once attempted to frighten a team into running away nor terrify the little girls by throwing firecrackers and torpedoes under their feet. In fact, Caldwell conducted itself in the most proper manner imaginable, and during the entire day bore a greater resemblance to a staid and-dignified New England town than a frontier village where a man is supposed to be served up for breakfast every morning. In the evening a ball was given at the Opera House by T.

H. B. Boss, at which the attendance was large and the enjoyment hearty and pleasant. Taking it altogether we don't know but what Caldwell is just as well off as if the entire city had turned itself loose in a grand T. H.
