The Indiana Historical Bureau report* these and similar home remedies were common among Indiana citizens of a century ago ' — and even more recently. It is a noble tribute to the hardiness of H o o s i • r pioneers that they survived not only their Illnesses but their cures. W, Ed*on Richmond nnd Elva Van Winkle, two Indiana University staff members, went searching for remedies that were a pan of Indiana^ life 100 years ago Here's the list they compiled: If somebody with blue gums bites you, rub the bite with some blaok hen litter, and the biter will lose his teeth. For a cut, bind on a poultice of fresh cow manure. Asthma — Drink tea made by boiling a hornets' ntst. Head cold -- Take nine whiffs from a dirty sock. teg cramps — He some eel skin around the leg. Croup —Rub the throat with skunk oil and take a dose of oil. Inflammed finger Jjtnta — Catch n weasel and squeeze It to death. Goiter — Pass • dead person's hand over the throat, Headache — Drink a stiff shot of water mixed with wood Mbe*. Rheumatism — Rub the afflicted part* with the blood of a freshly killed rattlesnake. Not all the cures were to disagreeable. Many ailment* — including cholera, fever, lung fever and other* — called for • liberal dose of wMsky sr #«. That particular remedy undoubtedly went down easier than the hornets' nest tea.
