PARATROOPER BUILD-UP — Paratroopers and equipment are landed at Bien Hoo airfield in the build-up of U.S. forces in South Viet Nam. (NEA Radio-Telephoto) 7 * < FATEFUL SINKING—A half-centur/ ago, the greatest liner then afloat went to the bottom off the south coast of Ireland with a loss of 1,198 lives, 125 of them Americans. The sinking of Britain's Lusitania by a German submarine on May 7, 1915, horrified the world and was a major factor leading to United States entry into the World War I two years later. Debate continued for years after the war over German claims, and British denials, that the liner had been carrying munitions. Harris on FBI most wanted list of 10 WASHINGTON (UPI) — A 68- year-old patriarch of lawlessness, Charles Bryan Harris, today became the oldest person ever placed on the FBI's list of 10 most wanted criminals. Harris, a reputed member of the Shelton gang that operated three decades ago in Southern Illinois, is sought for the double murder of a former girl friend and a man who had testified against him in a previous murder trial. Their bodies were found on Aug. 16, 1964, in a burned-out buildmg at Fairfield, 111. Despite his age, Harris is described by the FBI as "ex tremely dangerous." He probably is heavily armed and has warned that he will shoot it out with any police who seelc to; arrest him. The wanted man has a criminal record dating back to 1927 when he was sent to prison for counterfeiting in Detroit. Subsequently, he became known as a gunman for the Shelton gang that terrorized the "Little Egypt" area of Illinois in the 1930s. Despite tranquilizer shots, the New Zealand-bred stallion, one of the world's finest pacers, jumped half way out of his stall | a few feet from the pilot's cabin before he was hacked to death. Five men pinned down the kicking, thrashing animal which otherwise might have wrecked the plane in its frenzied death throes. There was no gun aboard the plane. The chartered cargo plane landed safely with its occupants bloodied, bruised and completely unnerved by the airborne battle with the terror- stricken horse. "It was a matter of the horse or all of us," said Donald ItfcNutt, the stallion's disconsolate trainer and one of the seven persons aboard the four engine DC4 propeller plane on the flight from Christchurch, N.Z., to Montreal, Canada.
