All, whothcr mem hers or not are earnestly invited to be present and it is hoped that a largo num ber of new names will be added to tho association's list During tho year of 1878 only four fires occurred in town and but one of these in the village limits, that being tho barn of Louis ISarney, which burned on tho 20th dav of Aucust.

Of tho others tho first was tho fire at Wright's Mills on the mornin" of the 3d cf January, when sev eral buildings were burned; tho second Iiein" tho barn on the Gould farm on the ni'dit of October 11, and the last one was the school house burned last Monday night on the top of Town Hill. Tho cab shop on l.erlin s-ido was slightly damaged on the of the 14th of March. Take it nil in all, it was a fortunate year for fires her The school house in tho Henry Xutt district was burned on Monday evening of this week. Tho alarm was not given in this villano till tho firo had been under headway for some time, but the engines were promptly brought out on its sounding anil about as promptly re housed upon the location and distanco to tho lire being ascertained. Due theory of tho firo is that it caught from tho chimney which is reported to have been very dufcotive, another that district matters was nt tho bottom of it.

This is tho second school house which lias been burned on the samcsito, the other burning some twenty years ago. The is reported as not heavy. Succeediug teams must tako each its place in front or in rear of those already on the ground, and all teams must be hauled well up to tho side of tho street.

Tho double and triplo rank formation hitherto practiced is dangerous and unnecessary, and we trust that all reasona- ablo men will aid in enforcing the regula tions. A very sad case of allliction is that of the family of Mr. Charles Morse of Plain field, who lives about four miles from the village, near the Marshfiehl line, seven of Ids ten children having died of diphtheria within two weeks, their ages ranging from one to thirteen years. NoiiTiiriKU). One of tho most ditlicult, if not dangerous surgical operations that practitioners have been called upon to perform, of hrto, in this section, was consummated last Saturday, in tho removal of an ovarian tumor said to be as largo ns a man's head from tho person of the wife of Marshall Hopkins. The operation was under tho direction of Dr. Homitns of Boston, senior surgeon of tho Massachusetts general hospital, assisted by Drs. Bradford, Porter and Davis of Northfield, and Kemp and Chandlor of Montpelier.

It took the surgeons nn hour and a quartor to cfl'oct the removal. At this timo (Monday afternoon) Mrs. Hopkins is said to bo doing woll and as comfortable as could bo expected, all things considered The tumor ndhored so closely to its sur roundings tht it was found necoisary to actually cut it away pieco-meal. Besides the persons named, Dr. II ins brought with lit 1 11 a medical student and a nurse from the hospital.
