Who's Newsv, • Why hasn't Jessica Lange, one of the nation's best actresses, been in any movies recently? After her Oscar win two years ago, I expected to see more of her. Also, where and when was she born? Lois Camber, Punta Gorda, Fla. You're right that Lange, born in Cloquet, Minn., on April 20,1949, hasn't been onscreen since 1995's Rob Roy. But she's been working steadily: Next fall she's Gwyneth Paltrow's mother in Kilronan, a thriller, and she plays opposite Michelle Pfeiffer in A Thousand Acres, a drama. Lange recharges at her Virginia farm, tending her family — her companion, playwright Sam Shepard, and three children. • I never understood why George Stephanopoulos, the boy wonder who had the president's ear, would leave the Clinton White House after one term. Doris Kwarcinski, Fall River, Mass. Officially, he was "tired." Yet no doubt he saw lucrative opportunity. Stephanopoulos, 36, |i who was paid $125,000 as one of the president's most trusted advisers, got a reported $2.85 million for the book he's writing, and that's just one of five jobs. He won't confirm how much he makes at each, but he also teaches at Columbia University, shares his political opinions on ABC, writes occasional pieces for Newsweek and gets at least $20,000 per appearance on the lecture circuit. What has she been doing? Brad Whipple, Westport, Mass. V.> Playing soccer all over the """"' globe. "For a while, I was gone almost every day," ,. ii ic » ii «i. Hamm: Hamm, 25, tells us. "I'm Socceris trying to slow it down, her nfe _ but I don't want to take away from my training." Her husband \ of three years, Marine Lt. Christian Cony, understands; he, too, will soon be gone, for six months' duty. The couple lives in Pensacola, Fla. • Who is that playing Don Johnson's dad on CBS' Nash Bridges? I think he's an old cowboy actor. Bessie Ollvo, Norman, Okla. Indeed, James Gammon, 57, began his career in westerns such as Gun- smoke, but he has played more than cowboys. In fact, he was Johnson's dad once before, in a TV production of The Long Hot Summer, and tells us most people don't realize "Don is a brilliant person. He's absolutely on top of everything." Gammon and wife Nancy (two daughters are grown) split their time between California (where Bridges is filmed) and Ocala, Fla., where they raise thoroughbreds. I think it was a mistake for ABC to cancel the acclaimed Murder One, especially after bringing in Anthony LaPaglia this season. What will he do now? Alicia Christian, Cincinnati Not TV, if he has his way. LaPaglia co-stars with Courteney Cox and Aidan Quinn in the just-out movie Commandments, as a man attempting to break all 10, and has several movies coming in which his characters push the moral envelope. But the whole Murder One experience soured the Australian-bom star on TV. "I don't want to work that hard to watch my work go down the toilet," he tells us. "ABC did not ever know how to handle the show. You have to usher shows in ... cradle them, protect them." Meanwhile, LaPaglia confesses he watches no network shows, but his girlfriend, Strictly Ballroom actress Gia Car- redes, watches it all — "Friends, all that stuff." LaPaglia (with girlfriend Gia Carredes) says he's had it with TV work. Masters champ Woods (at right with mom Tida) is legally Tiger- not "Eldrick" anymore. • Tiger Woods, who made golf history by winning the Masters at 21, is such a great role model for kids my age, 12. His name is so cool and original. What or who inspired it? Nick Kitchen, Marlette, Mich. Earl Woods named his only son Eldrick but called him "Tiger," after a Vietnamese soldier, Lt. Col. Nguyen P. "Tiger" Phong, with whom he had fought in the Vietnam War. The elder Woods, now on the talk show circuit promoting his book, Training a Tiger, was a Green Beret who served two tours. By the way, Tiger legally changed his name after his 21st birthday in December. • I saw a recent picture of singer Paula Abdul, who has been chunky at times, and she looked terrific. Did she do anything surgical to get that way? Lenore Wolke, Wayne, N J. We're told that Abdul's fit 35-year-old body is the result of good eating habits and regular workouts — nothing more.
