New J. C. Penney Opens Wednesday By DOROTHY NEWER The new J. C. Penney store in Shoppingtown Mall, DeWitt, appears to be a sure-bet to delight and surprise customers.

The store, scheduled to open officially Wednesday, was previewed yesterday by representatives of Syracuse's news media. Store officials, led by store manager Joseph A. McCarthy, and his wife, Betty, were hosts for the tours and a luncheon later at Glen Loch Mill One of the new departments that will attract shoppers is a self-service delicatessen and snack shop decorated with hanging (plastic) hams, cheeses and sausages. It features both sit-down and take-out serv-. ice.

Real blue-white diamonds can be bought in the store's large jewelry department. Orange carpets and umbrella-shaped merchandise racks identify a shop just for girls in the junior high school set. Although the building was previously used by the former Edwards department store, a complete remodeling job plus differently styled merchandising, entirely changes its appearance except for the central two-story imported glass chandelier and the escalators.

Penney's present store in Shoppingtown will close permanently tomorrow, according to store manager, Joseph A. McCarthy. The new store is stocked completely, he says, with new fashion goods, home furnishings and other merchandise. A number of Valentine's Day touches create a spring-like atmosphere.
