14 SYRACUSE POST-STANDARD, Feb. 19, 1974 My Card Bred With Secretariat PARIS, Ky. (AP)- My Card an Monday became the first thoroughbred mare to be bred to Secretariat, the Triple Crown winner whose fertility had beer in question. My Card, by My Babu-Ace Card, is owned by Walter Jeffords, a utilities investment consultant who owns a farm near Lexington, Ky. Jeffords, who was out of the country, apparently purchased a one season right to Secretariat from George Strawbridge an heir to the Campbell Soup fortune.

My Card was the winner of seven races and $98,404. She won the Selima Stakes at Laurel Race Track and is a half sister to One Count, winner of the 1952 Belmont Stakes. Strawbridge, who apparently bought into the Secretariat syndicate since it was formed last year, lives at Chesapeake Citv. but was unavailable for comment. Secretariat was syndicated fur a record of more than million early last year and since has become the first horse since Citation in 1948 to win racing's triple Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont.

Each of the syndicate members were to post $190,000 for one breeding right a year to the young stallion and the agreement was disrupted when veterinarians declined to certify Secretariat as fertile. However, Claiborne Farm President Seth Hancock said last week that a change in the syndicate agreement was being worked out to allow Secretariat at least one breeding season, which began Monday. Secretariat stands at Claiborne, near Paris, and was able to get two out of three test mares in foal earlier this year. However, veterinarians William R. McGee, Floyd Sager and D.

L. Proctor said their tests showed the presence in the horse's semen of immature cells or spermatogonia. The veterinarians said the "sperm count and morphology are compatible with normal fertility and it is our unanimous opinion" that Secretariat will get mares in foal. The gestation period for a mare is about 335 days but tests for pregnancy can be made after about 42 days. Connors9 Lead Extended NEW YORK (AP) Jimmy Connors, who shares the No.

Potvin Suffers Ankle Crack, But Will Play UNIONDALE, N.

Y. (AP) -An injury sustained by defense-man Denis Potvin last Thursday has been diagnosed as a broken ankle bone, the New York Islanders reported Monday, Potvin was hurt in a National Hockey League game against St. Louis. He finished that game and played against Chicago Saturday night before he learned that the navicular bone in his ankle was cracked. The Islanders said despite the injury Potvin would be ready for the game against the Montreal Canadiens at Nassau Coliseum Tuesday night.

tensive lineman Scott Hudgins supported charges made earlier by another player, Casey Ortez. Oretez, a starting quarterback, and wide receiver Allen Brown quit the team and returned to the mainland in mid-season after making the accusations. Honolulu police but said they found lothing to support Ortez's charges. Gutierrez and Hudgins said there were about six players who were betting regularly, and that most were from Hawaii. They said most of the talk was about S10 or $20 bets but were told the players involved occasionally pooled their money and placed bets up to $500.

"It had to be close to common knowledge on the team that some of the players had been putting money on our games. There was nothing se cret about that betting because no one even tried to aide it," said Gutierrez and Hudgins. "Some guys taljed about the point spreads and their bets like others talk about the waves and the weather." Despite the gambling charges, the two players said they only once heard of anyone even thinking of "throwing" a play. They said nothing happened because "blowing the play would have been too obvious." Gutierrez is from Chula Vista, and Hudgins is from La Habra, Calif. Both are seniors.

Coach Dave Holmes, who announced his resignation Sunday night, said he never heard any talk about gambling among his players. Athletic Director Paul Durham said police told hjrn they found no evidence in their investigations. Plan European Basketball Loop BRUSSELS (AP) A European professional basketball league extending from Paris to Tel Aviv, to be stocked largely with American players, is struggling for life. An organizational meeting March 8 is expected to produce an official announcement of its formation and the names of its first franchises. The American Basketball Association and its president, Mike Storen, are involved in the iniative, providing the organzation and know-how, but the owners of the teams will be Europeans.

"Basketball is at a critical point in Europe now," said Guy Van Den Broeck, coach of the Belgian Olympic team and Storen's representative on the continent. "It is has become a very popular sport that could be a major sport like soccer or cycling. But it's reached a certain level where the spectacle itself must improve or the interest is not going to keep growing. "It's the right time give the people something much better, and for that you've got to have real professionals, not the half-and-half phony amateurs that you have now." Van Den Broeck says the league would run from October to April with teams playing an average of two games a week. The ideal number of teams would be eight, he said, but the league might limit itself to six teams during its first year.

Van Den Broeck said there were five franchises that could begin play almost immediately: two in France, two in Belgium and one in Israel. The league plans to have dou-bleheaders with ABA teams touring in Europe, Van Den Broeck said. And eventually it's hoped the European League could become a division of the ABA with scheduled intercontinental play. The professionals have run into early opposition from some amateur sports authorities, notably in France, where the French Basketball Federation has warned that any player signing a pro contract would be banned for life and that it would oppose rental of municipal arenas to the pros. "That doesn't concern us very much," Van Den Broeck said.

"Those are the 'professional amateurs' talking, just people who are afraid they "re going to lose the good life when the real pros arrive."
