Ct Jfrteman, MONTPELIER, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1873. We lesirc to make the Freeman particularly valuable for its news from all parts of Vermont aal ourCrienJs in different parts of the State.es o-ciallyin Washington tiJ3, will confer a great favor upon us and our raslersby sending us local intelligence. Given facts and we will arrange them for the paper warr weens luces. I School Umma. The eohool metting of nins of Tuesday left the track and I Montpelier Uoion District whioh adjourned weather in good condition for the two daw on the eveoin of the 13th will be held to- of trotting which followed.

On Wednesday morrow. Thursday, erenina. It is hoped afternoon the first race was for those horses I that there will be a fall attendance of the that had never beaten three minutes. The I eitixeca as important matters relating to the nrst money in this race, $100, was taken by school for the coming year are to be dis- otor mining in three straight heats; time. I coased.

Every voter as well as parent in 2.50, 2.48 and 2.49. Storm King was entered I tereeted in the school should be present by A. H. Danforth of Rutland. The meeting will be held in the YiUage Hall, Ihe second race for purse of $250, ($125 7 o'clock to hrst, $75 to second, and $50 to third,) Tempsranck.

Another very interesting meeting was held on Sunday evening. Mr. Malilon Taplin presided, and also briefly addressed the meeting, yery modestly yet faith-fully pointing out what he considered had been the mistake of this movement in our village the mistake of not following up eae'j point gained, each success achieved, through enforcement of law, by more and mure determined effort. The principal address of the evening was given by Mr. J.

II. Kellogg of Troy, N. an a ldrees which was listened to with the closest attention and the evident satisfaction of the audience. Mr. Kell6jjg spoke very ably of the duty of personal example, and of both the duty and the power of the Church and of the press.

The Church should have pmved itself the conservator of this reform. Whenever it is indifferent to this great interest of humanity, it is most unfaithful to its Lih ca'l-ng, It is coming, however, to rec-oetiize i's Fpocsibility, and will yet take it pofition un advanced ground. It had tern tf.e p'easure of the speaker, on a recent visit to Montreal, to learn of the temperance work asMimed by St. George's Episcopal Chuivh of that city the Dean of the parish at its head. The largest temperance organization of which he knew, was formed in a church of his own denomination a Pr s'yterian church in Brooklyn.

Most honorable mention was made of the Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, whose members numbering some hundreds are pledged to total abstinence. The press, which in our cjuntry is more potent thao ail the, has great reepjnsibi lity.and should ever stand committed to this cause. Entertaining and spirited remarks were made by Rev. II. A.

Spencer and Col. A. C. Brown. The attendance was large, the Hall ing well filled.

Moxtpelier W. R. R. li. There is now remaining less than seven miles of track to be laid before forming a junction.

Judge Hall finding last week that the track would be laid to Groton Wednesday night promised the Wells River people an excursion on the new railroad on Thursday. The excursion was under the manag3ment of J. (j. French and Mr. Wiswall, Mr.

Mun-g'jn's Thursday fjrenoon one passenger car and nine platform cars took about MX people from Wells River to Groton where they found gathered the inhabitants of that town together with people from adjoining towns, making in the neighborhood of 2jO0 present in all. The people Oi Groton set two tables each sixty feet long and entertained tLeir visitors in excellent shape, Judge Id ill giving them a speech of welcome to begin with. la the afternoon Mr. Wiswall announced that the train would take the Groton people to Ryegate and back and as many as the train could carry were so taken and brought back in time for the Wells River excursionists to start at 5 1-2 p.m. fur home.

At 6 1-2 a the train again left Wells River taking a large number who passed the evening very pleasantly in dancing at Groton. The whole affair was pleasant and creditable to all concerned. CuajiGB. Messrs'. Albert Johon-nott of this village and Fred Johonnott of Burlington have purchased the inteseet of their late co-partner, Wtn.

N. Peck, of Montpelier, in the tannery and leather business heretofore carried on in Montpelier and Burlington under the firm name of Peck Johonnotts; or, to be as 4 conspicuously exact," as was our extemporary in heralding a similar transaction, Mr. Peck has retired from the firm of Pick Johonnotts and the Messrs. Johonnott will endeavor to run the concern alone. The sale, or purchase, in cludes the business and the real estate owned jointly by the late firm in Montpelier and Burlington, together with the tannery and grounds in Berlin.

The gentleman who goes out and those who remain in are among our best citizens and most reliable business men, thoroughly conversant with the whole minutia; of their extensive business, and having the fullest confidence of the commer cial world. To the one party all acquain tanccs will wish a pleasant and long continued enjoyment of the competence 83 worthily and lairly earned to thn other, the successful busiotss career and patronage which they 83 richly merit and are sure to attain. Tue Fall Term of the Montpelier Union School will commence Monday next. Mr. Westgate continues in charge of the Grammar School Department assisted by Miss Miry Emery of this village.

Miss Emery has the reputation of being a competent and accomplished teacher, and we trust Nos. 7 and 8, will have much larger classes of pupils than they have had during the past year. This term is the commencement of the school year, and it is to be hoped that full clashes fn each of the lower rooms will be found amply prepared and anxious to go up higher." There ought to be no reason for and consequently no symptions ot falling off from school attendance as these higher departments are nearod. Railroad Accident. A regular freight train on Friday evening left the switeh open just abuve Montpelier Junction and an extra freight following on the main line was thrown into Dog river in as twisted shape as could well be imagined.

Three cars followed it and were badly shattered. The engineer, perceiving the switch was wrong, shut off steam and jumped for hie life. The fireman, Lawrence Kane of Duxbury, thought to hold the train and put on the brakes. He was buried in the mass of ruins and found covered stones and dirt. The breaking of a stake protected him from a quantity oi bark which must otherwise have killed him and he was extricated and brought to the Pavilion where Dr.

Woodward att ended to his wounds. He was seriously hurt about the head and on his arm, though no bones were broken. Ilia ecalp was badly torn aB was the side of his lace. He still lies very ill from Lis wounds. The track was cleared so that the evening train to the South was delayed but a lew minutes.

The New Road to Barre on the Barlin side of the river, commencing at the Red AicS Bridge and coming out upon the old Barre road just above the Perno Bridge, is now open to travel, and is becoming quite a thoroughfare. hen cars begin regular trips most of the travel mutt necessarily go over that road. Gocxdsville. The summer term of school closed on the 22d inst. Owing to the sick ness of Miss Austin, teacher in the upper room, both schools were united during the last two and a half weeks.

Of the pupils who have a perfect record in regard to ab sence, tardiness or dismissal, we have the name of Frankie Willey in the upper room, and in the lower room, Nettie Braley, Ber tha Glazier, Ida Balch, Ilattie Rich, Ella Cady, Gertie Brown, Ella Simonds, Hattie Andrews, Lucy Braley, Winnie Flint, Cor nelius Hurley, Willie Clark, John Sweeny. The little bay mare Nellie enlivened the exercises by running away and wrecking what vehicle she was harnessed to, having first spilled the driver.

She was not injured, however, and did some fine trotting the next day.
