Monday, September 22, 1986 PAGE TWENTY ONE THE HERALD-PALLADIUM, Benton Harbor-St. Joseph, Michigan Krumm's Iniellig ence Plays JBig Role In MSU Win Dame, which holds a 33-18-1 edge in the series, had won nine of the last, 10 meetings. Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz is now winless in four tries against said. "We're not flashy," Krumm said of MSU's secondary, that includes cornerback John Miller and safeties Dean Altobelli and Paul Bobbitt. "But we get the job done.

We're slow by most standards, but that makes us work a little harder. We make it up with technique." Krumm's technique will be remembered by Spartan fans for a long time. the Spartans. Before Saturday, he had lost twice to MSU while coaching Minnesota and. once while at North Carolina State.

MSU's Perles is 2-2 against Notre Dame. Steeler assistant. "You can't measure speed with brains." "Todd Krumm is a perfect erf-ample of smarts in our program. I'm so proud of him. He is the star and hero of today's game." But Krumm also showed some great athletic talent against the Fighting Irish.

The Irish passing game featuring quick out routes gave University of Michigan defenders fits last week. "All week we worked on Notre Dame's out routes and I'm suppose to read the quarterback," said Krumm, in reference to his first quarter TD interception. "I did on that play and so I knew what he (Irish quarterback Steve Beuer-lein) was going to do." It was Krumm's first touchdown as a Spartan. The 6-2, 200-pounder hadn't reached the end zone since his junior year at West Bloomfield High. Krumm said he didn't recall much the first 20 yards after intercepting the pass which was headed for the Irish's fleet-footed Tim Brown.

"I sort of fumbled it and had to knock it down to my chest," he recalled. "Then I saw Steve because I saw his No. 7 coming after me." But he'll certainly remember the last 24 yards. "It's a memory I'll have the rest of may life." The TD gave the Spartans a 7-3 lead with 1:11 remaining in the opening period. Krumm said his game-saving theft with 1 :26 remaining was a lit By AL AREND Staff Sports Writer EAST LANSING Is intelligence as important as speed and agility when playing defensive cor-nerback? Michigan State Coach George Perles thinks so and he feels the intelligence of his junior corner-back Todd Krumm played a key role in the Spartans 20-15 victory over Notre Dame here Saturday.

Krumm- returned a pass interception 44 yards for a TD in the first quarter and then ended Notre Dame's hopes in the final minutes with another pick off. "I wish (Pittsburgh SteelersX Chuck Noll was here to see this because he preached and preached about smarts," said Perles, an ex- tle different. "Beuerlein was flushed from the pocket and I merely took a chance (that he was going to throw another sideline pass to Milt Jackson) and it paid off," Krumm said. "We'd said in the huddle during a timeout just before that we had the game in our hands. We controlled it.

What we didn't want to do was play tentative. We didn't want to lose it because we were setting back." "That last play was just a great one on bis part," the Irish's Beuerlein said. "And (Krumm's first TD) put us in a hole and we had to play catch-up." "After that touchdown (Krumm's first), we were a little disjointed for the remainder of the first half," Irish Coach Lou Holtz Notre Dame hasn't won a road game since the 1984 regular-season finale at Southern California. The attendance for Saturday's game was 79,895, the fourth largest in the history of Spartan Lorenzo White's 147 yards against the Irish was his 14th 100-plus game in 16 starts for the Michigan State's victory over Notre Dame was the first at Spartan Stadium since 1968. Notre is ichigan State Leaves ND Feeling 'Krumm-y' tackles.

Outside linebackers Tim Moore and Kurt Larson added 12 and 11, respectively. Yarema, who had his best game passing in a season-opening 20-17 loss to Arizona State, was just seven for 18 for 114 yards. Nine penalties also hampered the Spartans. "I guarantee you that we will get rid of those penalties next week," noted Perles. Beuerlein had a good day passing for Notre for Krumm's hitting 19 of 36 for 259 yards.

Brown had five receptions for 75 yards and Mark Green six catches for 53 yards. Beuerlein had one touchdown, pass, a 38-yard scoring strike to tight end Joel Williams in the third quarter. The rest of Michigan State's scoring came on field goals of 24 and 25 yards by Chris Caudell. Statistics were as close as the score, with Notre Dame having total offense edge of 341 yards to 284 yards. "Either team could have won it," added Perles.

But Perles thinks there will be several more MSU victories this fall, maybe even more than in last year's 7-5 season. "I think we are a better football team this year," Tw iIIP -1 Itg tv1 By JOHN VANDEN HEEDE Sports Editor EAST LANSING Notre Dame must be feeling "Krumm-y" after going 0-2 against the State of Michigan. With defensive back Todd Krumm making the key pass interception for a touchdown and another theft late in the game to stop a potential winning Notre Dame scoring State toppled the 20th-ranked Irish 20-15 here Saturday. It came just one week after the University of Michigan spoiled the Irish coaching debut of Lou Holtz with a 24-23 victory over Notre Dame. Even though Notre Dame could have easily won both games, the Irish are winless.

It's the first time the Irish have started 0-2 since 1978. Gerry Faust, Holtz' predecessor, was never winless at this point. 4'It was a great victory for us," said Spartan Coach George Perles. "Obviously, the game ball went to Todd Krumm. He was the difference today." Holtz said he was "disappointed, certainly, but we knew it wouldn't be easy.

It was very difficult for us to get something going offensively. We had trouble running the ball. And Michigan State made an awful lot of big plays." None of the key plays turned out to be bigger than Krumm's. After Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead in the opening series on a 27-yard field goal by John Carney, Krumm put MSU in front to stay by intercepting a Steve Beuerlein pass and returning it 44 yards for a touchdown with 1:11 left in the opening period Michigan State led 10-3 at half- time and 13-9 after three quarters, before appearing to put the game away early in the fourth quarter on a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dave Yarema to flanker Mark Ingram. But Notre Dame answered with a 5-yard touchdown run by tailback Anthony Johnson with 6:07 left in the game.

After Michigan State was forced to punt on its next possession, Notre Dame took over at its own 34 with just 2:37 remaining. Beuerlein passed 26 yards to flanker Tim Brown, before a roughing the passer penalty gave Notre Dame a first down at the MSU 31 with 1:31 left. But on the next play, Krumm picked off a pass intended for Milt Jackson to preserve the Michigan State victory. "We had to take some chances," said Krumm of his second interception. "I did, and it came out all right." The victory put Michigan State at 1-1 going into this Saturday home game with winless Western Michigan.

The win could also put the Spartans back among the nation's Top Twenty. Notre Dame, which will drop from the ranking's elite, is also at home this week against Purdue. The other Michigan State heroes Saturday against Notre Dame were Ingram, who caught five passes for 107 yards; tailback Lorenzo White, who rushed for 147 yards in 41 carries, and a Spartan defensive front which limited Notre Dame to just 82 yards rushing in 36 totes. Perles said White was "dinged up" late in the second period and was "still a little foggy" in the second half. Middle linebacker Shane Bul-lough led MSU defenders with 14 dium Saturday.
