22 July 22, 194S Citr GI«k»-G«i»U«, Mu*o City, !•• Freak Car Sports 2 Front Ends De« Moines, </P)—Patrolman Frank Manny blinked Wednesday when he spotted a car that had 2 front ends and 2 steering wheels with a man sitting at each wheel. Manny looked again and sounded the siren on his police cruiser. The strange vehicle, with 3 youths inside, came to a halt. Manny ordered them to follow him to the police station. There he found that the. car, consisted of the front ends of two 1929 model Ford sedans which had been cut in the center and then welded together. It looked like 2 cars but it had only 1 motor and only 1 steering wheel worked. The youths, Dick Wood, 20, Baldwin, Mich., Charles Breed, 21, and his brother, Sterling, 19, both of PawPaw, Mich., explained they were traveling to California. They said the strange car had been fixed up to make it "look modernistic." They were allowed to go on their way. Back to School in August Savoy, Mass., UJ.R)—School children in this tiny town in the Berkshires will return to classes in August while pupils in the rest of the United States are still enjoying their summer vacation. Savoy students will have the last laugh, however. They'll get another long vacation next winter when cold and snow make school-going difficult hereabouts. Polio Drug Thought to Be Effective Houston, Tex., (^P)—Doctors at the city-county Jefferson Davis hospital Wednesday confirmed re- potts that polio patients treated with thiazolyl, a new sulfa-type drug, are up and walking around. They also said the acute illness period of patients treated with the drug is being cut as much as one-quarter of the usual 5 to 8 day period. Give Warning The doctors, who declined to be quoted by name, warned, however, against over-optimism. - "We feel that the drug is doing some good," one of them said, "but we just want to foe sure before we make any claims." Use of the drug here and at the John Sealy hospital at the University of Texas School of Medicine at Galveston was disclosed last Saturday. , 40 Treated Jefferson Davis officials said "more than 40" patients have been treated locally with thiazolyl— also known as "drug No. 2"—and another new drug, aureomycin. Dr. Chauncey Leake, dean of the university school, Saturday night confirmed the reports but said "it is too early to give any opinion on the value of the drug/' He said 31 patients have been, treated at Galveston. Nearly 250 polio victims have been admitted to Houston hospitals this year. Grass silage can be put up in any weather—which makes the silage method a practical one for handling the hay crop. Montana Biggest State, He Claims Auaconda, Mont., (ff) —Jack C. O'Toole, Shelby cattleman and Montana booster extraordinary, insists his state is the nation's largest, instead of being 3rd largest as the books say. Here's the way he argues: "Many persons have the idea that Texas is the biggest state in the union. They arrive at this conclusion because of 2 reasons: First, Texans have been preaching that propaganda for years. Second, people haven't stopped to think that much of Montana is standing on end. "Iron out the Rockies, and Montana would exceed any other state in size." Boys Attend Camp Fertile—The Boy Scouts are attending at Camp Roosevelt, Clear Lake, this week. Their leader, Loren Nissen, was unable to go with them so Gale Rye will take his place. The Boy Scouts attending are Neil and Dale Kunes, Dick and Jerry Jenkins, Larry Purcell, Dale Lindquist and Herbert Pederson. LOOK AT THESE LOW PRICES AT YOUR A. <r P.
