Carpet Glossary BR0ADL005I is a designation of carpet width. It does not describe any special quality, style or construction. Tlie tei-m refers to any carpet made in seamless width of 6 feet and over. PDLE YARNS, sometimes called "face yams," are the tufts of yarn seen on the surface of the carpet. BACKING YARNS are the materials that foi-m the carpet back or foundation, to which pile yarns are anchored. A second backing fabric may be laminated to the primary backing, and the backing may be coated with latex. PLY is a layer of thickness of yarns used in carpet. If the pile yarn is described as "3-ply," it means that each tuft is made of 3 strands of yarn spun together. Ply affects texture; it does not necessarily improve quality. WILTON, AXMINSTEB and VELVET are types of looms on which woven carpet is made. Carpet woven on these looms is also described by these terms, such as "a Wilton carpet," "a velvet carpet," or "an Axminster." TUFTING is a construction process in which pile yarns are attached to a pre-consti-ucted backing by wide multiple-needled machines. This process is used for the majority of carpet produced today. KNITTING Is another construction process In which carpet pile yarns and backing are interlocked on multiple-needled knitting machines. Function comes first Family rooms quieter with carpeted floors The house with a room set aside for a "family room" merits some special decoratmg attention. This is one area in which function must be the determining factor in decor. Special activities and equipment—such as home movie projectors or stereo sets—must be planned for with adequate storage space and easy access. Fur- nisliings for other activities — such as tables for games and comfortable seating areas — should be included. All areas of the room whould be well lighted. Practical Planning Above all, the furnishings diould be practical and geared to plenty of activity—the family room is no place for fragile pieces or delicate treasures! Fortunately, today's home furnishings Include a wide variety of furniture fabrics and accessories keyed to family room requirements. Special soil-resistant finishes on upholstery fabrics, easy-upkeep wall treatments and non-scuff furniture finishes all fit into this category. Styling of furniture and carpets has also been broadened so that homemakers can achieve the right degree of informality in family rooms in a number of ways. It's no longer necessary to limit decorating to a strictly "rustic" style, although this decorative style is frequently chosen for family rooms. Furnishings with a Spanish flair and styling with a "sophis ticated country" look offer two examples of decorative possibilities for the family room. Both styles are seen in furniture which is sturdy, but not bulky, and casual but flexible enough to team with a variety of decorating chemes. New carpets and rugs have also been styled along these lines—and a carpet or rug is an essential item in family rooms. Noise is always a factor in rooms geared to activity, and a carpet or rug performs the major function of sharply reducing airbom noises and virtually elimmating impact noises. Whether home movies, a teenage record session, a children's party or television are on the agenda, a carpet or rug in the family room provides the right acoustical control. Comfort Underfoot The carpeted floor also sets the pace in comfort, another essential feature of any well-designed family room, and can be the basis for a bright, cheerful color cheme. The wear and tear imposed on a family room presents no problem for a wisely-chosen carpet or rug. A dense, well-constructed quality is recommended for ma.ximum wear, and color and te.xture should be chosen with an eye to practicality. It's best to select a sturdy texture, such as tight loops or twists, rather than the soft plushes. Padding, also called "cushion" or "underlay," is vital to the satisfactory installation of wall- to-wall carpeting. Pads should also be used under large rugs. The primary function of padding is to serve as a "shock absorber" under carpeting. By helping to absorb the pressure of traffic, padding prolongs carpet life; it also adds greatly to comfort underfoot. Carpet paddmgs are made of a variety of materials, including felted hair, combinations of hair and jute, rubber and rubberized hair. The felted paddings are made in various weights based on thf! When planning color schemes for your home, make a collection of color samples. Paint chips, fabric swatches.and carpet samples should be included. Take your color collection along when you shop for car pets and rugs. Although you may make your final selection at home, through the "at home shoppmg" services offered by reliable retailers across the country, your samples will aid you in making an initial choice of preferred colors. As a further guide in corabta' ing colors successfully, take a look at patterned carpets. These patterns have been designed by skUled artists who know which colors work host together, and they can be a big step in building color schemes for your home. They range from 32 ounces to 86 ounces. Normally, a 40-ounce pad is satisfactory for home use. Thicker paddmg will, of course, offer more comfort and luxury. The rubber padding comes in a variety of thicknesses, measured in inches or fractions of an inch. A suitable thickness for normal home use is one-quarter or three-eighths inch. A number of good rubber pad dings today have a surface of burlap or scrim fabric molded to one side. These paddings are laid with the fabric side up, permitting a taut, even carpet installation. Installed Padding In a waU-to-waU installation, padding is installed along with the carpet. For a large rug, padding should be- cut to fit about an inch less in length and width, so that the rug slightly overlaps- the pad. A proper selection of padding can be made only when the carpet is chosen. Carpet buyers should avoid the mistake of trying to compensate for a skimpy carpet with a thick padding, or choosing a flimsy padding that is inadequate for proper carpet support and comfort.
