18-Thursday,May 6,1965 Reillands Daily facts Texture establishes 'mood' Varied textures are an aid to home decor Texture, along witli color and pattern, is a most important ele ment in establishing the "mood" and basic st}'le of a room. The range of choice in carpet and rug textures has never been wider than it is now. Furthermore, texture is a style note on its own in 1965 carpet and rug collections. WTiich texture should you choose? Your own perscMial idea of the way a caipet should look and feel is the first consideration, followed by your plans for decorating and practical aspects of carpet texture. Wide VarieJy Here are just a few of tlie choices you might make: Cut pile is a familiar carpet texture. Straight cut yarns form an even pile surface, especially luxurious when the pile is deep and thick. This velvety texture is often described as "plush pile" or "velvet"—although the latter term, technically, refers to carpet woven on a velvet loom. Looped pile is also familiar. Loops may be low and dense in a single-level pile surface, or arranged in a "high-low" looped design. Either looped or cut pile may be twisted for a nubby or pebbly texture, and may result in a shaggy texture when surfaces yarns are long. Multi-Level Sfyles Many carpets and rugs today have a combination of cut-and^ looped pile, with many varia tions in multi-level designs. terns are also seen in textured carpets. Generally, these textures, together with solid-color cut pile, are the most formal- looking carpet iypes and lend themselves beautifully to elegant furnishings. Twist textures, loops or shaggy cut yams are frequently used with informal furnishings. In many smartly-styled contemporary rooms, a definite heavy texture is chosen for the carpet to complement smooth furniture finishes and sleek fabrics. Special texture effects are sometimes achieved by "carving"—a process by which skilled craftsmen using electric hand clippers carve designs into thick plush pile. Another process is "random-shearing," when some high looped yams are sheared to form a random eut-and-looped texture design. Definite Textures Carpets with a definite texture hold their appearance well under constant traffic. For areas used daily, it's best to select a well-constructed, dense carpet with a tight-looped, tight-twist, cut-and-Iooped or especially dense cut-pile texture. These cai-pets with texture interest are less likely to show "shading" than a solid-color, plain "plush" pile. Shading is not a defect; in fact, it is often considered desurable, since it produces an interesting lighting effect on a solid-color carpet, [t simply means that light is reflected in varying ways as 'Scroll" or "scrulptured" pat- carpet tufts are bent under pres- m m o a 6 '^P^J'J - r-"'-' -•"'f ^"t^ > Carpeting makes an kitchen quieter, safer, more pleasant. The large number of home accidents occurring every year could be prevented, however, and one important measure is to provide safe footing throughout the house. Carpet can be a real aid in this respect. Carpet's slip-proof surface Is boon on stairways, in hallways, on any floor where children might be playing. And if someone should happen to slip in the home, carpet's pile surface helps to cushion the fall and prevent serious injury. To make sure that you're getting the most out of this safety factor in your home, check these points: Carpet should be installed se curely and kept in good condition. If you notice a worn, frayed spot or loose edge, have repairs made immediately by a professional cleaner or store service department. Make sure that small rugs stay in place. It's best not to use lightweight rugs on a highly- polished floor — choose rugs heavy enough to stay down, or tape or tack others in place. This room, more than any »ther, ^ould be planned primarily for comfort, and for its relaxing atmosphere. The softness and warmth of a carpeted floor is basic in this setting. When planning a bedroom, think first of the room 's function. Sleeping, of course, is the primary function, but make your own checklist to plan a more efficient, attractiv» bedroom. Is there a comfortable place for sewing or writing? Are you planning to include a television set, or a bedside telephone? Consideration of these factors will determine basic furniture arrangement and lighting. Try to arrange furniture for easy access to the bed, so that making up the bed will not present a traJEfic problem. Consider the traffic pattern, too, in plac ing other pieces of furniture that are frequently used, such as a chest of drawers or dresser. Organize space by placing furniture used for storage as close as pos.'iible to ctosets. Remember the placement of both artificial lighting and available daylight when planning furniture arrangement. When selecting carpet for the bedroom, it is often possible to indulge a fondness for colors that would not be practical in more heavily-trafficked areas of the house. Since bedrooms are usually not subject to the wear and soiling conditions imposed on other living areas — such as living rooms, hallways and stairs—a medium-quality carpet or rug will be sufficient. If the bedroom doubles as a study or children's play room, however, take this factor into consideration when selecting suitable quality The procedure for selecting a bedroom color scheme is the same one you follow in choosing colors to be used anywhere in your home. First, take stock of the furnishings you now have and must keep. Second, consider the basic colors which help most in unifying these pieces. With so many variations of all the basic colors now available in carpets and mgs, you'll have no problem in selectmg exactly the right color for the largest unbroken area of your bedroom—the floor.
