This is indicated by the great numbers of fossil shells contained in our limestone rocks, all of whieh belong to salt water species. But jnst before the present geological epoch, alter the Mississippi and Missouri basins had been permanently elevated above the level of the Halt-watcr ocean, a thick fresh-water deposit of fine sand, lime and clay was made along the central portion of these great river basins.

A reddish tinge is often given to it by the presence of a little iron. This deposit is known as the "Bluff" or "Loess" formation, near Wyandotte it is nearly 125 feet in thickness. Professor Mudge, in his valuable article upon the geology of Kaunas in the first biennial report oi the State Board of Agriculture, states that the Loess in extending westward becomes thinner, and in fifty miles the the deepest beds are not over thirty feet thick. After passing 100 miles it almost entirely disappeirs. It is the same deposit seen so extensively in the Missouri and Mississippi valleys.

The Loess has evidently been formed by the silt brought down by the Missouri river when it flowed in a higher bed and co-ered a wide-spread valley almost equal to an Inland sea. The whole area overspread by it in Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska, as described by several geologists, confirms this theory. Prof. Aughey made three analyses of the sediment from the muddy waters of the Missouri river and found that the ingredients were the same as those of the Loess and in nearly equal proportions." F.
