Owing to the recent epidemic of con- tajjious diseases our town, I think it would be well to say a few words in regard to the sanitary conditions exist- "b' iug at the present time.

As all know, defective plumbing and want of drainage and sewerage, especially in hick ly settled localities, is a fruitful source ol disease. The filthy and unsanitary condition that must exist where slops are emptied upon the ground from a door or window, closets exposed to the air that must be breathed by the inhabitants of the house, and a'so by the neighbors, and decaying vegetable and animal matter scattered about, is menace to the public health, This is the time of year when ali property owners should see that there is no. defective plumbing about their premises, and that all buildings and out houses should receive proper sewer age ami drainage. He particularly careful that there is no decaying vegetable or animal matter left upon the surface of the ground. All refuse matter should so far as possible be burned.

Particular attention is called to the state law relative to the putting of a dead animal or animal substance into or upon the bank of any lake, pond, running stream or spring of water. II. K. Saki.knt, M. I).

Jr. Jslitnil I'tmrf Yf initial. Hear Sir: A painter complained that our cans are too full unhandy: spill. It's a way we have; handier not to be full; but we have a weakness for full-measure. Our gallons contains eight pints; the usual "gallon" is seven.

We'll think it over again but we like a full can. How much short would you like a barrel? Seven gallons would be the proportion. Short-measure suggests that the shortage is probably not in the cheapest ingredient. (luess we'll stick to four quarts to a gallon, and fifty gallons a barrel.
