PAGE TWENTY-EIGHT THE HERALD-PALLADIUM, Benttn Harbor-St. Joseph, Michigan SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 138 Question Daughter's Death; Body To Be Exhumed but we're finding out now that his whole life is a mystery. Every story he told us was a lie. He said he was a Marine and he was never in the service. He said he was a wealthy farmer and there's nothing to that," she said.

Davis apparently left Michigan, Mrs. Mohr said. A neighbor told authorities Davis asked him to forward his mail to Florida, she said. Davis told Hillsdale County authorities he and his wife were riding horses on their Pittsford, farm, 20 miles southeast of Hillsdale and just north of the Ohio border. Davis said he heard his wife scream and turned to see her on the ground.

According to the Hillsdale County sheriff's original report, Davis took his wife to Hudson's Thorn Hospital in neighboring Lenawee County, where she was pronounced dead. The death certificate was signed by Dr. Robert Harrison, Lenawee County medical examiner. Harrison has said a deputy medical examiner reported Mrs. Davis' fatal neck and head injuries.

Det. Schindler said authorities have been unable to identify that medical examiner. Harrison also said be did not allow an autopsy in Hillsdale County because authorities there did not sus pect foul play. But at Schindler's request, Dr. Arthur Stein, a Hillsdale Hospital radiologist, examined X-rays of Mrs.

Davis and concluded she did not suffer a broken neck. Mrs. Mohr said she became suspicious when her daughter appeared worried during a visit two days before her death. "I was going to babysit the farm while they took a trip to Flqrida. I got there Monday and when I walked in she said, 'Mom, am I glad to see Maybe his past had come up.

I knew something was wrong. "She never got a chance to tell me anything before she died. I remembered her telling me she had ontrlife in surance policy, but he (Davis) told us in the emergency room there were none," Mrs. Mohr added. She said Davis had insisted his wife's body be cremated at her request.

Mrs. Mohr said her daughter, a Catholic, never would have requested cremation. (AP Laserphoto) Japanese Hit Truck Tariff flF THE ill I VILLAGE GENTRY TEAM THE GENTRY SHOP, THE OTHER PLACE, DADDY'S GIRL PRESENTS PRE-SEASON SENSATIONS! TOKYO (AP) Japan said Friday it will formally protest the United States' sharp increase in import duties on small trucks by charging it violates an international trade agreement. A Japanese foreign ministry official said the government will appeal the increase from 4 percent to 25 percent through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, a multinational trade agreement designed to reduce tariffs and dismantle other barriers to international trade. The higher tariff took effect Thursday, one day after a federal judge in Washington ruled against efforts to temporarily delay the tariff. The higher duty was designed to close a loophole that allowed foreign automakers to ship cab-chassis units to the United States and then attach them to truck beds, thus qualifying for a 4 percent duty. Japan's two largest automakers, Toyota Motor Co.

and Nissan Motor strongly criticized the higher tariffs and threatened to take countermeasures in retaliation. The tariff increase nas been the subject of numerous Japanese protests since it was first announced by the U.S. Customs Service last May. "In light of the U.S. action disregarding Japan's repeated appeals, the government has decided to make an appeal through GATT," the foreign ministry spokesman said in reference to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

He said the U.S. action was "contrary to the' stable development of trade between the two countries" and "counter to the rules of GATT." AUG. 24th 12to4 WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) -The Ontario Labor Ministry says it is considering a health study of former employees of Bendix Automotive of Canada which closed its Windsor operations in June. Dr. Murray Finkelstein of the ministry's special studies and services branch said Thursday the former Bendix employees would be tested for exposure to cancer-causing asbestos. Finkelstein said Bendix has hired a U.S.

firm to make the examinations. He said that if the ministry is assured that study will be adequate, the ministry will drop plans for its own tests. John Moynahan, president of Local 195 of the United Auto Workers union, said the ministry should go ahead because a company study would be suspect.
