Furnishings Mart Opens for Autumn Chicago — A preview of the summer Home Furnishings Market which opens Monday in Chicago and in Grand Rapids reveals for the first time in several years that there will be an ample supply of merchandise in all brackets, according to Roscoe R. Rau, executive vice-president of the National Retail Furniture Association. A growing fashion' appeal is evident in lines featured in the markets of both centers. From' the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, Wallace O. Oilman, general manager, reports that many manufacturers are including some interpretation of Provincial in their new showings. Some of the new modern furniture has a distinct Provincial flare. On the other hand more formal French Provincial is modernized. More Functional Pieces Furniture of all styles is being made more functional and flexible to fit today's streamlined living. Modern furniture will incorporate new convertible and dual or triple purpose features, like the mahogany tea cart with drop leaves which makes a cozy breakfast or supper table for two, or a spacious server. A dine-card table with a shallow drawer in each side seats 2 for dining or 4 for bridge when closed, yet accommodates six when opened. A tiptop table is an elegant console with the leaf up against the wall, and a card or dining table when the entire top is flipped around. A judge's chair, high backed, foam rubber cushioned, and covered in highly polished hand- glazed leather is one of the more unusual items. Prices About Same Preliminary reports indicate that prices of furniture will be about the same for similar quality. Some manufacturers have added a-less expensive grouping to their offerings, however. These YOUR ROOF LEAK? Better see or call FULLERTONS if your roof leaks, or if you think it might. Living-Dining Room Reflects New Trend The modern trend toward combined living-dining rooms is especially adaptable to small homes and can be carried out in a num- oer of ways. A dining alcove, fitted and furnished like the living room, gives the latter a feeling of much added space and makes it actually a functional part of the living room except at meal times. Furniture in harmony with that of the living room should be used in the alcove. Drapes, on a traverse, can be used on the opening of the alcove if the home owner decides it is desirable to have the rooms disconnected during meal time. Combining the dining room find living room is an excellent space saver in small homes, as the space needed for the dining alcove can be used to make the living room much larger. Owners of homes which have the disconnected rooms can combine them by removing the dividing wall. on a Modernized Homes Insist on the Genuine INSTALL PERMANENT Ceramic Clay Tile • BATH ROOMS • KITCHENS • SHOWERS • FIRE PLACES It Costs No More For The Best. Finishes must bring out the most beauty without destroying characteristics of the natural wood and must protect the surface from inside and outside damage. The variety of finishes used today makes it difficult to know ood from bad. However, there -ire definite ways to find out whether or not the finish—regard- ess of the kind—is a good one. To test the top coat, run a fingernail across an unexposcd furniture jart. If it cracks and leaves a white mark, it is obvious that the ob is a poor one. Another good test is to rub a finger back and forth over a small section of the surface until it becomes warm. If the surface feels sticky or if it powders, the finish is of low quality. Refinement Developed in Heating The sensational demand for automatic heating'equipment is easily the most significant in the heating industry today, says the Plumbing and Heating Industries Bureau. The demand for automatic heating today far exceeds the forecasts based on surveys made during the war years, and has caused hurried revisions of production schedules of manufacturers of heating equipment. The urgent demand for automatic heating covers all types of heating systems and all fuels and is as strong among owners of existing homes who are seeking to modernize their heating equipment as it is among builders of new homes. There are 3 types of central heating systems, each of which may be automatically-fired, the bureau explains. These are hot water, steam, and warm air. There is no relation between the type of heating system and the fuel. In other words, says the bureau, any one of the 3 kinds of central heating systems may be fired with any one of the 3 kinds of fuels. This means that the owner has an option in the choice of the heating system and in the fuel. Distribution Varies Similarly there is a choice of heat distributing surfaces, particularly in the case of hot water and steam heating systems. With a hot water heating system, for instance, the heat may be distributed by means of radiators, convectors, radiant baseboards, or radiant panels. Each of these methods of heat distribution provides radiant heat. The difference consists in the variation in the size of the heat distributing surface. In the case of radiant panels, the entire floor, wall, or ceiling serves as a heat distributing surface. Controls are the "brains" of every automatically-fired heating system whether the fuel be oil, gas, or coal. The principle control instrument for automatic heating is the thermostat. Zoning Is New The modern thermostat is an extremely sensitive instrument It is instantly responsive to the slightest change in room temperature. A refinement of the standard thermostat is the electric clock thermostat. Maintaining the same accurate control, it also automatically provides lower temperature during the night period.Another method of day-night control is the twin thermostat operating in conjunction with an electric time switch in the basement. One of the refinements in automatic heating is zoning, that is, Globe-Gazette Photoi NEW TYPE OF HEATING—The first homes in Mason City to install radiant floor heating are the new ones being constructed for Kenet and Frank D. Pearce in Willowbrook. The upper photo shows the elaborate system of pipes in the latter's home before it was encased in concrete. Below is the finished appearance of the floor. There are no registers or openings. The heat is evenly distributed over the floor with a slab temperature of about 88 to 90 degrees. This gives a normally comfortable air temperature in the house of 65 degrees, slightly under that for conventional heating. Actually there are several systems in one unit, suitable for giving varied temperatures to different parts of one home. There may be one system for the bedrooms, another for the living room and kitchen and still others for the garage or whatever is desired. Galvanizing is the process by which steel containers are covered with a coating of zinc. This zinc coating makes galvanized ware rust resistant and corrosion resistant. V."-. Steel utility baskets arc handy for carrying wet laundry. They are leak-proof and light enough to be carried easily. -~&& dividing the house into 2 or more zones, each controlled by a separate thermostat. Still another refinement is modulation, that is, the continuous circulation nf the heating medium whether it be air or hot water. This prevents cold floors and drafts. Another innovation in controls for automatic heating is the use of an outdopr control to anticipate temperature changes before they are reflected by the indoor thermostat. Automatic heating has mncle it possible to heat the domestic hot water supply by the same boiler which heats the house. This is accomplished by the circulation of the hot boiler water around coils containing the domestic water. Thus the domestic water is heated indirectly by the boiler water the year around.
