FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1973 THE NEWS-PALLADIUM, BENTON HARBOR, MICEL PAGE FIFTEEN 9" ir Dawks Seeking Field, Gate Wins 1. 4t MFL Eyes Expansion, More Pro Financial Help The Hoosier Caps have the league's best defense in allowing just 13 points per game. Other league records include Columbus at 3-2, Flint 3-2-1 and Lansing 1-5-1. Hawk plans for the last home game include reducing prices to $2 for adults and $1 for cfiildren. While the Hawks have been drawing about 300 fans per game for a shaky financial situation, MFL commissioner Ted Piascik reports "everybody else seems to be doing pretty squad has improved enough to challenge Indianapolis, a squad which downed the Niles--Buchanan based Hawks 14-7 back in July.

"The week before last we had a good rushing game and last week we had a good passing game," comments Hedstrom. "Now we've got to get the two together." Wide receiver Jim Roolf has been the favorite target of quarterback Mike Conner, while the ground attack has been centered, around running backs Mitch Pruiett and Chip Newman. Top linemen up front have included center Bill Blake, guards Fred Ferguson and Delaine Richardt and tackle John Judd. Hedstrom also has confidence in the defense for his 0-6 squad which has allowed more points than any other MFL team. Top efforts have been turned in by end Ed MaGuire and linebackers Rick McKay and Pruiett.

Indianapolis, which is coming off a sound 21-3 triumph over Flint, stands second in the league to Youngstown at 4-2. i- 5 good." Flint, for example, Is drawing up to 6,000 fans per game. "I'm really surprised that you can't get fans for that brand of football," declares Piascik. "I don't know if it's advertising or what. I know the program book is the best in the league and the facilities are good." While the Hawks are considering selling their franchise because of their financial plight, the league is looking ahead to expansion with more financial support from the pro leagues.

Grand Rapids has sent the league a letter of intent and a group from Wheeling, West Virginia, is interested, but "might be rejected because of the traveling which would be involved. League teams have already picked up $11,000 in support this year from the National Football League and is looking for even more next year from the NFL and the Canadian Football League. Under an agreement signed last year, the NFL pays $1,000 for each player signed out of the MFL. The price goes to $1,500 for players making the final 47-man roster. Four players off the Youngstown and Columbus rosters and three from Indianapolis were picked up by the NFL, with one still being on the Chicago Bears roster.

The same agreement was started this season with the Canadian Football League, which sent four players to the Lansing All-Stars. Piascik sees the CFL pact as having the potential of being even more profitable because the league has a limit on American players and wants to send Canadians down for experience. BACK FOR BLUE DEVILS: Lawton will have good experience back this year and among the 11 returning lettermen are these three standouts. From left to right are quarterback Kevin Kinney, lineman Randy Russell and fullback Rod Cramer. The Blue Devils open their season September 14 at home against Camden-Frontier.

(Staff photo) Lawton Could Be Threat If Defense Comes Around 5 i The Michlana Hawks are dc-termincd not to be a bust at the gate and on the field for the entire Midwest Football League season. While coach John Hedstrom's squad goes looking for its first victory Saturday night in Indianapolis against the Hoosier Caps, plans are being formulated for a "fill the stadium, night" in the final home game' Sept. 8 against the Lansing All-Stars. The Hawks were edged 20-10 by unbeaten Youngstown last week and Hedstrom feels his Rocket Gridders Register Registration for the newly-formed Rocket Football League will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, and again on Saturday, Sept.

8, at the rear entrance to the Benton Harbor high school cafeteria. League participation is open to all boys between the ages of 8 and 11 as of Nov. 15 this year. Each boy must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have his birth certificate. He must also pass the' league weight limit and receive an appointment with the league physician for a physical examination before equipment will be issued.

Enough equipment will be available to field four 25-man teams. If more than 100 boys register this week, those not receiving equipment will be given priority on Sept. 8. Registration should take approximately 20 minutes. The Benton Harbor Jaycees, who are sponsoring the league, also are looking for persons interested In serving as coaches and officials.

Interested person should contact Morgan Hager at 925-9647. ANSOi? "if 7" question mark of the team." The defensive line could pose the biggest problem, with only Randy Russell returning to the trenches. Fred Welburn, a second-team all-conference, returns at linebacker, while the secondary has the most experience with the return of Grendle Lee and Rod Cramer at halfbacks. Offensively, the Blue Devils will have plenty of experience with four returning starters in the backfield and three in the line. Kevin Kinney, another second-team all-conference pick, returns at quarterback, with Cramer at fullback, Lee at halfback and Mark Churchhill at tailback.

John Hackenberg, who saw considerable playing time last year, could also see starting duty at halfback. LAWTON If Lawton coach Walt Hitchcock can find the right answer to a questionable defense, the Blue Devils could make a serious bid for the Southwestern Athletic Conference football title. Last year Lawton put together a surprisingly strong showing in the SAC, finishing in a three-way tie for second with a 4-2 record. The team finished 4-4 for the season and has the makings for improving on that mark this year. Hitchcock has 11 returning lettermen, nearly all of whom saw some starting duty last year.

But only four of those were on defense and that's what has the Lawton coach concerned. "We should be able to score, but it's going to be a matter of getting the defense to come around. Its going to be the Russell and Lynn Rogers will return at the tackles, while Welburn will be back at an end. Letterman Paul Stoffer will! probably be at a guard. 1 "There are going to be a lot of good teams in the conference this year, but I think we have a shot at it," said Hitchcock.

We have a lot of juniors and if we can generate something with them, then we might upset someone along the way," said Glidden. 9, 1973 are finally catching up with us." Only 21 players are currently listed on the Bangor roster and Glidden thinks only about a half dozen more will come out after school starts. Despite the bleak overall picture, Bangor does have some high points, particularly on offense. All three returning lettermen were starters last year and gives the team enough experience to be able to run a pass play. Quarterback Jim Lee returns, along with center Kerry Zantello and end Loren Grayer. "We are going to be primarily pass oriented, at least to begin with," said Glidden.

Last season coach Terry Glidden hit a virtual gold mine of talent and ended up with one of the team's better records of recent years, 6-3 for the season and 3-2 for third place in the KVA. But 18 of those players including all-state halfback Maurice Mitchell departed via graduation and with only three returning lettermen, Glidden is being forced to rebuild nearly the entire squad. "We're hurting for experience and a lack of letterwinners," said the Viking coach. "Plus we have a poor turnout so far.
