McLain said.

Whether the boos were genuine or merely to tease the often brash Ticer righthander is hard to say. McLain didn't like it. But he showed the record opening day crowd of 53,572 that he is every bit the star he was in 1968 by firing a three-hitter as the Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 6-2.

McLain was sensational after Stanl ey At Shortstop Mental Error On Tag Is Only Mistake DETROIT (AP) A supposedly sore-armed Mickey Stanley came through hia first game of the season at shortstop in pennant-winning fashion. Last year the Tigers averaged five runs a game while McLain was pitching to help him to his 31-6 record.

When Tony Horton the first inning and Cleveland got another run in the second on a walk, single and sacrifice fly, it looked like McLain might need more than five runs. But Norm Cash doubled home two runs in the third off Indian 1.61 earned run average, Tiant did not take kindly to some of Napp's calls. "He missed about 15 pitches," said a saddened Tiant as he toweled himself in the Indians dressing room. "I know the strike zone is different this year but Napp doesn't give you anything' high or he is like everybody else, he makes mis takes" he, said. Tiant lost his composure and probably the ball game in the Tiger third inning when he ran up a 3-0 count on Tiger leadoff man Dick McAuliffe.

Tiant shouted his objections and Nap headed out to the mound. Indians' manager Alvin Dark hurried to get between them and calmed things down. fmm Tiant Loses 6CooF Over Umpire's starter Luis Tiant to tie the game. Then 17-year veteran Al Kaline blasted a 365-foot home home run in the lower deck in leftfield with Dick McAuliffe on base to put Detroit ahead 4-2 in the fifth. A single by McLain scored an insurance run in the sixth and a bases loaded walk to Don Wert added the final Tiger tally.

Tiant had control problems as he walked four batters and was behind on many others during the five innings he worked. Afterwards he complained of plate umpire Larry Napp's calls. Tiant, still irritated, walked McAuliffe two pitches later and the Tigers were on their way to a two-run inning which enabled them to tie the Indians at 2-2. Tiant's luck ran out in the fifth inning as Kaline hit a two run i 4 Freehan. give Indians of the way Wirephoto) homer to put the Tigers in front to stay.

"The pitch' got from me but Kaline really hit it," he recalled. Infielder Larry Brown had the only power note for the Indians him and three hore off reliever Jack Hamilton. Last year Tiant had the best earned-run-average in the American League, 1.60. Detroit was idle today but Mickey Lolich is scheduled to oppose Cleveland's Sam McDowell Thursday. The Tigers wanted the victory badly.

"Everybody started yelling at each other and pumping each other up," said a very pleased Kaline in the bustling Tiger dressing room. "They wanted to start out all over again (to win the as up as the second batter in the first inning he slammed a 380-foot drive into the left centerfield lower bleachers. McLain said, somewhat dismayed. "I don't know what word to use, maybe it is envy they had." The boos came as individual Tigers were announced before the game to receive World Champions rings. There were quite a few cheers for him also, but the boos were conspicuous.

But Stanley looked quite at home in the position Tuesday as the defending World Champion Detroit Tigers took a 6-2 opening game victory over Cleveland behind Denny McLain's three-hit pitching. "My arm felt real good today," Stanley said. "I took some pills yesterday and I think they really helped." Stanley handled five grounders without error and his only mis-cue was a mental error in the fifth. "And I heard them react when I didn't tag the runner at second too." Tiger Manager Mayo Smith was generally pleased with the performance of the 26-year-old Grand Rapids native.

"He was a little handicapped in that because of his arm he didn't get to play much (at short) in spring training," Smith said. Cash, noted for his poor first-half season hitting, said getting the double to drive in two runs was a big hit for him personally, "especially because of the starts I've had." L.ft 71 DETROIT (AP) Luis Tiant, stingiest pitcher in the American League last season in the earned run department, is hoping for a rematch with the Tigers' Denny McLain after dropping a 6-2 decision to the Detroiters Tuesday. "So. I lost today but next week maybe things will be bet ter," Tiant said in the Indians quiet dressing room after he lost the season opener. Tiant was philosophical about the way the Tigers surged back from a two run deficit to knock him out of the box and go on to an opening day wifl. He was not so calm about his differences with plate umpire Larry Napp whose calls aroused Tiant's ire.
