SYRACUSE POST STANDARD 1 1 Nov. 23, 1971 New Unit On Aging Launched Mayor Alexander told the newly formed Metropolitan Commission on the Aging it "will be the focal point for all that must be done for the aged in our community." Alexander and Deputy County Executive Richard Hanlon addressed the 20 members of the commission at its first meeting at Syracuse University. The group is the only one of its kind in the state and one of seven in the country. It was formed from the mayor's Temporary Commission on the Problems of the Aging and was granted $26,339 in federal funds for its initial 120 days of operation and planning. An additional $325, 000 is forthcoming.

The elderly are without care and support from members of their families, the mayor said, and often live "under incomes that keep The commission must find out how best to serve the elderly, Alexander said. Hanlon, speaking for County Executive John H. Mulroy, who was meeting with Gov. Rockefeller in New York City, said the commission "will get every portion of county government power it needs." Approximately 45,000 aging persons in Onondaga County have been "long neglected," Hanlon said, and county officials have "high hopes for this metropolitan commission formulating projects to help them to continue to make progress." Beattie dean of the Syracuse University School of Social Work, as chairman pro tempore. A permanent commission chairman is to be chosen by a nominating committee.
