Wants To Be A State. The Great Transcontinental Railway deal, by vrhlch the Harriman Interests In the Union Pacific secure control of the Southern Pacific, has attracted wide attention by reason of the vastness of the operation and its far-reaching consequences as affecting railroad ownership in this country. "For the first time in the railroad history of the United States," says the Philadelphia Press, "the Transcontinental lines are directly under the control of the proprietors of the Eastern lines. The chief railway proprietors of the East have always held more or less interest in Western and transcontinental roads, but they "have never before had actual control from ocean to ocean, such as they hare now. The Pennsylvania, the New York Central and the Baltimore and Ohio now not only have connections with the Pacific Coast, but they have the power severally and collectively as to rates and the general conduct of the affairs of every line across the continent but one.

"This, with their ownership of lateral lines, gives the trunk line syndicate almost full control of the railroad system of the country, an undertaking which even a few years ago would have been thought by the boldest railroad projector to have been impossible of accomplishment. The Northern transcontinental lines are securely in aflliiatlon with the new owners of the Southern Taciflc and there Is left but one line across the continent, the Atchison, which is not directly under the influence of this coterie of railway owners." Oklahoma Must Walt. The next candidate for Statehood is to be, Oklahoma, which has piled up a population of 400,000 in 10 years. There Is to be an other opening of a strip of land nearly as large as the present Territory next fall. and already a local campaign for Statehood is well under way.

The Brooklyn Eagle thinks that "what the country wants to keep Oklahoma waiting until we have had time enough to determine whether she would-be a vatnitble member of the Union of States. The chief argument for her admission is that she has more population than eight States which are already in. That is one very excellent reason for waiting until we see If Oklahoma is going to retain her population. Thousands of her settlers were made up from the roving class of born movers. The born mover is not a good citizen anywhere, and Oklahoma ought to be kept waiting until he is eliminated from her borders and we can see the kind and number of people left.

"Among the States with less population than Oklahoma are Utah and Idaho. We should have been saved several annoying complications if we had kept those Territories waiting, and we could get along very well without Wyoming or Montana. Because we have been foolish about admit ting Territories before Is no reason why we should repeat our folly. Tb)s is a good matter in which to imitate Horace Greeley, whose boast It was that he made new mistakes." Names Of Battleships. An act of Congress provides that certain classes of warships shall be named for States of the Union.

Thirty-one States are now represented on the navy list, as follows: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire (by the Kearsarge), New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont. Virginia, Wrest Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. "Most of these," observes the Philadel phia Record, "are sonorous names, well adapted for designating fighting ships. Nevertheless the scheme of nomenclature adopted by Congress Is responsible for some misfits. Dakota would be a good enough name for a battleship, but South Dakota and West Virginia are simply ridic ulous.

State names containing the prefixes North, South, New or West might well be shorn of the surplusage. Jersey would sound better than New Jersey, and where the omission, as in the case of the two Carolinas, Dakotas and Virginias, would lead to duplication the States might be represented (as in New Hampshire) by a famous name in their local history or ge ography." Diamonds Work Wonders. 'Yes; George asked mo how old I would be on my next birthday." "The impudent fellow! Of course you said nine teen "No; I said twenty-six." "Mercy, girli You ain't but twenty-fourl" "No; but George is going to give me a cluster ring with a diamond in it for eTery year." Cleve land Plain Dealer. Federation Of Denominations Ia Proposed. TO BE NATIONAL IN SCOPE Delegates Assemble In Philadelphia To Prepare To Start The Movement All Over The Conn try.

Philadelphia, Feb. 5. Necessity of cooperation, rather than competition in church work, formed the keynote of the discussion at a conference of ministers, which opened today in Association Hall, at Fifteenth and Chestnut streets. The conference was called for the purpose of organizing a National Federation of Churches In America, and delegates are present from many and widely separated sections of the country to give the movement the seal of their approval and to pledge to it the hearty support and co-operation of their churches. The devotional' exercises which preceded the formal opening of the conference were conducted by Rev.

Dr. W. W. Ramsay, of the Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Churel, of this city, who took occasion to speak of the great good that would be accomplished by such a federation as It was proposed to form this morning. At the conclusion of the religious service J.

Cleveland Cady, of New York, chairman of the national committee, called the conferenceto order, and Dr. Il-nry B. Roberts, of Hartford, was elected secretary and authorized to select bis own assistant. The report of the national committee was then presented by Rev. Dr.

E. B. Sanford, of New York. It dealt with the inception of the movement, the work that has al- ready been accomplished and what it is hoped to accomplish in the future. It called attention to the fact that local federations have already been organized in Chicago, Syracuse, Schenectady, Jersey City, Portland and Auburn, Maine, and in conclusion expressed the "deepening conviction that in our beloved country.

In common with, Christian believers in other lands, we are in the sweep of a movement of profound significance. Co-operation, and not competition, in the days and years before us ia to be the watchword of service tiiat will manifest to the world as never b'fore our oneness In Christ. Who can tell how great a blessing this will bring in the advancement of the Kingdom of God at home and abroad? Working together, the churches will minister to human need as never before, and In so doing prove that the Gospel is the supreme remedy for all evils." Chairman Cady spoke briefly but effectively of the magnificent possibilities of a union of church workers; of the enthusiasm exhibited In the movement by men and women of all denominations, and told how the field might be widened, the results Increased an hundredfold by a unison of purpose and a banding together of all the churches. Benjamin G. Welch, who Is connected with the offices of the Eagles Mere Railroad Company at Lewlston, was invited to address the conference, and he spoke at some length on "Interdenominational Aflallatlon." Rev.

Charles R. Thompson, of New York, chairman of the committee on organization, read Its report. This embodied a form of constitution the principal sections of which were those setting forth the aims and objects of the proposed organization. These are declared to be the securing of the co-operation of all churches and Christian workers for the more effective promulgation of the doctrines of Christianity, and also to promote the formation of State and local federations. Action upon tha matter was postponed until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.

At the afternoon session Rev. Dr. Frank Mason North, corresponding secretary of the Methodist Episcopal Church Extension Society of New York, presented an interesting report on "Federation In City Evangelization," after which "Local Federations and Their Work" were discussed by 6everal of the delegates. The night session was held In the Central Congregational Church, Eighteenth and Green streets, and was presided over by Mr. John H.
