Steam heat. Tel 1027-W. DETROIT. April 15 (AP). The automobile industry was credltedto-day with removing nearly 130,000 residents of southern Michigan from the relief rolls since January 1.

Motor car plants and allied industries in the Detroit region employed 28,497 heads of families then on the welfare rolls, said Dr. William Haber, Lansing, state director of relief. He based his estimate of the total reduction in relief cases by using 4.2 as the average number of persons per family. Wayne and Oakland counties, large centers in tha automotive industry, set the restoring relief families to a self-supporting basis. Oakland county reported a 30.8 per cent reduction in the number of families oft relief, and Wayne county, including Detroit, 28.9 per cent.

Full Gain Not Shown Dr. Haber pointed out that the figures were as of March 22, and did not reflect full improvement which took place during the first quarter Benjamin J. Tobin, deputy welfare administrator here, announced that one motor 'plant had employed 650 men whose -families were on relief during the last few days, making possible the removal of 2,700 persons from the rolls. "Co-operation between the welfare department and Detroit's industrial plants has reached a higher degree within the last few months than ever before," Tobin said. "Many employment managers now give us a good share of Jobs to be filled as their production moves forward." The relief office here pointed out, however, that Detroit still was administering relief to 34,900 families and that the problem remained grave.

48 Report Decreases For the state as a whole, the net reduction in relief cases during the first quarter amounted to 26,384 families or 110,000 persons, a survey by the relief administration showed. Since increases were reported in some of the northern counties of the state. The total was 13 per cent lower than the year-end figures. Forty-eight counties reported fewer cases and 34 showed an increase, with most of the Improvement confined to 12 southern counties, all of them heavily industrial. The production of motor oars and trucks remains at the highest levels in five years, with the output about 20,000 units a day.

NEW YORK, April 15 (AP), The stock market encountered realizing barriers today, especially In the recently buoyant metals, and prices generally turned moderately Irregular. Steadiness in most categories was the rule during the early hours and, even in the profit taking flurries, there were a number of Issues that succeeded in weathering the telling and it was noted that the activity dwindled sharply on the declines.

Some of the, rails were unloaded when the long-awaitel pension law decision by the supreme court again failed to make its appearance. The New York stock exchange cut the official call money rate to of 1 per cent, a new record low. Bonds were little Hter than steady. Grains were Inclined to dip and cotton milled about in a restricted range. The h'old currencies were a bit easier to foreign exchangr markets.

Some; Small Advances Despite the wavering symptoms In tocks, as a whole, such issues as North American, Texas Gulf, West mghouse, U. S. Industrial Alcohol, Du Pont and American Radiator managed to retain small advances. U. 8.

Smelting, however, dropped 2 points or so, and American Smelting, Howe Sound and Cerro de Pasco were down 1 or more. The utilities, including American Telephone and Consolidated Gas, were virtually unchanged. Among rail loaers of fractions to around a point were Atlantic Coast Line, N. Y. Central, Santa Fe, Delaware Si Lackawanna, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific.

Such stocks as U. S. Steel, Bethlehem, Johns-Manville, Case, Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward, General Electric, National Distillers and Standard Oil of New Jersey moved a shade in either direction. International Business Machines yielded more than a point. U.

S. government bonds moved quietly during the forenoon, with, values slightl" improved In treasury 3s, 3s and Federal Farm Mortgage Issues. Bee: use it had been expected, the treasury's announcement that the $1,250,000,000 remaining fourth Liberty 4s would be called for redemption Oct. 15 caused no flurry in the federal list. funds have held at one per cent since Dec. 8, 1933. The previous record low was of 1 per cent. The reduction followed a cut in the "outside" can rate to of 1 per cent by leading New York banks. The decline In the official and "outside" rates for call money was seen in banking circles as a response to an increase of between $200,000,000 and $300,000,000 in excess reserves which accompanied the redemption of Liberty bonds by the treasury.

The lowering of the rate on call funds is not expected to stimulate any marked increase in borrowings for the purchase of securities on margin, bankers said. It is estimated in banking quarters that brokers already have ample accommodations to take care of the current rate of stock market activity. kOUR SPECIALS Include everything 115 Farms for Sale WANTED Men. not under 135 lbs. 5 18-50.

METAL ROOFING Apply it your- BUCHANAN. April 15 (Special). -The work of beautifying the Red Bud trail from the northern Buchanan city limits to the Oronoko township line, allocated as a state FERA project, was started this morning, when 12 men, under the direction of Prof O. A. Gregg, landscape specialist of the Michigan State college extension department, began the work of clearing brush and debris from the sides of the road preparatory to an extensive program of reforestation which will start as soon as work on the underbrush is completed.

Sapling redbuds and dogwoods, and young sumacs and forsythias will be planted, as well as a number of other native trees and decorative shrubs. It will take about five years for the seedlings now being planted to grow to maturity, but by 194Q, Prof. Gregg declares that the Red Bud trail, an integral part of the LaSalle Memorial highway, to be dedicated in 1937, will be one of America's most beautiful highways, especially where it skirts the beautiful, winding St. Joseph river at the foot of the Moccasin bluffs, past beautiful Batchelor, I. CHICAGO, April 15 (AP). -Policeman Edwin Peppard, 30, was fatally Injured early today when he was trapped in a burning apartment building after he assisted other policemen in routing 30 residents from the flaming structure. Spectators said Peppard appeared at a window on the fourth floor when his escape was cut off by burning stairways, and that his clothing burst Into flames just before he plunged from a fourth story window. He died a few hours later in a hospital of burns and internal injuries. Authorities blamed the Are, which did damage estimated at $10,000, on combustion of oily rags In an unoccupied flat.
