THE ADA WEEKLY NEWS Page our Thursday July" 22 1937 THE ADA WEEKLY NEWS and OUTPUT CRUDE concluded 6 0 high wind wrecked hangar and bowled barns in the Durant from large John 50c $500 That business conditions in Pontotoc county are highly satisfactory is evidenced by the report of the tax commis sioner for May Only eight counties paidjnore sales tax than they received from the state assistance fund During the month the county paid $2148918 and received $14998 Old age pensioners numbered 939 dependent children 419 and blind 23 If crop prospects are realized the purchasing power of Pontotoc county citizens will be raised 'far higher than the' figures given above There are about300000000 barrels of crude oil age in the United States That is a lot of oil but this country now consumes so much of it that men connected with the industry figure that the supply above the ground would last only 59 days in case production was halted The Arabian Nights and other fairy stories dwell quite a bit on magicians and their marvelous deeds in the long ago but not one of these tales can compare with the cold facts of how oil in various forms has revolutionized life on this planet Nor ig is there' any reason to believe that the limit has been reach ed there are fields of usefulness that have not yet been explored It does not change the nature of a crawdad or a mud turtle to drag him from out of the mud and place him on clean ground or in a clear gravel bottomed stream' He will seek his old hole as soon as possible It is a sad reflection on human nature that it is somewhat like these denizens of unwholesome environment The constant tendency is to slip back and only the ones of strong will power remain put when lifted to a higher level than the one to which their habits are accustomed One of the great aims of education is to show the way to better things and cultivate the will power that will keep alive ambition to climb to higher plane of life As long as man strives for better surroun dings there is hope for him A war between Japan and China would be bad for the United States Japan is our heaviest cotton customer and a1 large volume of trade in other commodities passes between the two nations Likewise China is a good customer A war would cut off much of this oriental trade for the time being Under such circumstances it is not surprising that the ad ministration is trying to Jind some solution the difficulty other than war Washington observers predicts that a serious split in Democratic ranks in congress is not far off The majority is so un wieldly that it cannot be frightened into holding to gether because of fear that the Republicans might profit by a split and mny members have pet projects of their own they want to put over Members have been derided as mere rub ber stamps until they are in a savage frame of mind and want to prove their independence The party is already badly split jn the senate and if the same thing occurs in the house the rubber stamp accusation may be lifted from a con siderable number of members Judge Thomas Doyle of the criminal appellate court is the latest to express disgust with wholesale issuance of paroles in Oklahoma He declares that this procedure is discouraging to enforcement officials who after working hard to get convictions see their "work nullified byisome at torney or legislator who has a pull A penitentiary sentence or even one' for a misdemeanor does not mean much now Often the convicted one never serves a day being paroled before being taken to prison wealthy people of the islands The population is a hodge podge The Hawaiians are a mi nority group being outnumbered both by those who have gone from the mainland of this coun try and by those from Japan Chinese are almost as numerous as the original Hawaiians Serving as an outpost of this country the islands are heavily fortified Mrs Olson expressed the opinion that instead of spend ing fob much money on the forti fications we probably do not spend enough If this country ever gets into war with Japan or some other far eastern power the islands will be our first line of defense The industry of the people con sists mostly of growing sugar pineapples and entertaining tour ists The sugar is the main agri cultural crop with pineapples gaining The Ada Lions Tuesday got a picture of life in the Hawaiian Islands when Mrs Bess Olson instructor 'in East Central told of the history work and play of the inhabitants of the mid Pacific possessions of this' country She gave a brief review of the history of the islands tracing the changes which have come with the influx of the white people from the United States and Great Britain and the yellow and brown races from the Occident She gave a picture of the abundance of vegetation with its many colors She traced the government of the islands under tribal chiefs to a kingdom and the giving way of the kingdom to territorial status in the United States Missionaries went to the islands from Great Britain a hun dred years ago or more have left definite traces The descendantspf the missionaries today are the Production Past Week Jumps 35589 Barrels Okla homa Gains OKLAHOMA Our neighboring town of Stratford is preparing for its annual picnic August 6 and 7 Stratford is a good town with a progressive citizenship and usually does a thorough job of any enterprise tackled It is a safe bet that the picnic will be a success from every standpoint for word to that effect has already gone out Nevada the smallest population of all the states being less than that of Seminole and Pontotoc counties com bined but it has played an important part in national affairs by sending men of ability to congress In the Senators Stewart and Jones were leaders among Republican senators Then the Democrats sent Mr Newlands first to the house and then to the' senate where he made an enviable record Now Senator Key Pittman is president protempore of the senate Senator McCairan has also acquired a considerable xx degree of influence and is an outstanding opponent of the court plan Thus by sending able men to Wash ington Nevada with a population of less than 100000 has wielded more influence in national affairs than many of the more populous states that were less discriminating If Japan undertakes the conquest of China at this time it will give Russia a good chance to step in and settle the boundary disputes and other quarrels according to her own ideas However that might expose her to attack by Germ any In that case rance would be in a position to settle some scores with Germany Italy 'might come in then and finally Great Britian would be certain to be involved As a distant possibility the United States might be dragged in and thus the World war would be fought over If such a war cofnes'it will mean annihilation of one if not both sides This time there will be no Woodrow Wilson to urge justice in settling matter the side that wins will dictate any sort of terms it wishes and they will not be easy The Spanish war has been in progress for a year and estimates of deaths run as high as 1000000 If these were soldiers it would be bad enough but when it is remembered that a large proportion of the victims were women and chil dren the matter is all the more deplorable and sickening The atrocities of the struggle are a blot on modern civili zation and Germany Russia and Italy will have to bear a large part of the blame since they supplied the combatants with guns ammunition airplanes and men and have stead fastly refused to stop wy Cotton consumption in the United States for June set a new high mark of 681394 bales and for the 11 months of the cotton year the figures are 7361737 bales Cotton mills of the country especially in the South have been extremely busy during this period Exports dropped about half milllion bales All told the consumption for the year will be around 13000000 bales Ways and means of recovering some of the foreign cotton trade lost during the past several years are being sought but not yet found It is reported from Washington that John Lewis is rather puzzled about the attitude of President Roosevelt to ri: ward him John some months ago publicly reminded the president that his organization had contributed liberally to Mr campaign fund and expected him to recipro cate by backing the CIO The president has grown silent xx lately and Lewis is not certain where he stands and cannot find out The president recently' gave him a back hand slap yh by stating that government employes would not be per mitted to bargain collectively or go bn strikes' Lewis was trying to organize the employes but that warning gave him a severe setback Beyond that he has not heard 'anything one way or the other from the White House Death has ended the long and remarkable caree of Mar coni the father of wireless telegraphy The existence of electrical waves was already known but no one had applied them to the transmission of messages' When only 21 Mar coni succeeded in putting thesri waves to work and wireless telegraphy was born Many improvements have been made since his first rude instruments were put into play' and it reached its climax in radio as we have it today The im portance of the invention cannot' be overestimated The most remote regions of the earth can be reached by wireless Thousands of lives at sea have been saved by Marconi's in vention and as time passes the number will be greatly in creased Marconi: is entitled to rank with Morse Edison and Bell in the field of electrical communication' He was a benefactor of tre human race It is really surprising what a person can do when he makes up his mind to do it The results often surprise even himself A bulldog determination is the first essential to any sort of accomplishment and when one it the victory is already half won Obstacles do" not count when one takes the bulldog grip on himself he rides over them rough shod rix ri xxxx' k' 'xSN: xxWW A hot time is in prospect in Arkansas for the Democrats Under the law a special election must be called soon to name a Successor to the late Senator Robinson Nominations may be made either by the state committee or by a primary Just now candidates are divided on the method each wanting the method most favorable to himself adopted That means a row at the outset: Governor Bailey is said to be an aspirant for the place and there are a number of others of the same mind The governor will appoint a senator to serve until the election has been held There will be some fat farm animals in Pontotoc county next fall and winter eed crops are abundant and there will be plenty for all When marketing time comes farmers will realize some handsome profits for their work If cotton measures up to present prospects and the price is anywhere near right the purchasing power of farmers will be greatly increased They have had to deny themselves many things they needed badly and will now have a chance to supply themselves all of which means more trade everywhere They have had to wait a long time but this time it looks very much like their day has arrived at last? The state is soon to be deluged with a fjppd of initi ated bills The average citizen will sign anything put under his nose hence most of these bills will be certain to obtain sufficient signatures to place them on the ballot If the drive continues through next year the size of the ballot carrying them will be as large as a blanket Those who wish to vote intelligently will have to do some close study to find out what the bills are about Perhaps it would be well to swat all of them by discouraging this' practice which is being badly abused and far different in application from what the writers of the constitution intended China would be doing a good service not only for her selfbut to the world in general including Japan if she should prove herself capable of whipping the daylights out of the Japanese armies now in China Japan is in the hands of an arrogant military clique that has all but ruined the country with its demands for more and still more money for army and navy This is the bunch that conquered Manchuria and has brought the country to the verge of war with Russia more than The Japanese government is helpless against these war lords and if they should be humbled it would be a blessing to Japan China has stood for about all the aggressions she well can and this time it looks like she may call the bluff of the generals who are blustering around like turkey gobblers 1 There was once a man whose thought was so wholly centered on himself that he fancied himself to be the target of even the most general remark He looked the moon through a telescope but all he saw was himself and the next time there was a lunar eclipse he at once that the whole thing was just another effort to wipe him out Blackwell Tribune July 10 149150 85450 383900 618500 474900 met Mon th for Royal Service program which was opened with songs Mrs Orlin Rickard jn charge Mrs Hopper gave the de votional Topics were given in the fol Two compelling forces have brought about a "radical im provement in Pontotoc county agriculture during the past 15 or 20 years: One of these was the boll weevil that made it necessary to turn to other crops than cotton and th? other is the natural desire of progressive people for improvement xx' The two forces working at the same time have brought about a readjustment all along the line With' a livewire county agent to take the lead in the improvement program farmers xt have branched out in several directions with the result that Pontotoc county really practices diversification on a large scale and is not dependent on any one crop Of course the riri 'limit in improvement has not been reached but with the entire farming element on the upward march Pontotoc coun ty is becoming a different place from what it once was THE IRST PASSOVER (Sunday School Lesson for July 25) When Moses and Aaron went to the royal palace and de manded that Pharaoh let the Israelites depart from Egypt a titantic contest of wills began The first refusal was fol lowed by a plague and Pharaoh relented until the plague was removed He then revoked the permission This hap pened eight more times each plague being more severe than the ones before Pharaoh no doubt thought he was dealing only with Moses and Aaron and did not realize that he was opposing the Almighty himself: inally the climax was reached God told Moses that with one more plague Pharaoh would grant the demand and ordered the people to prepare for the momentous event In this last visitation a demonstration was to be given that would impress both the Israelites arid the Egyptians' with the omnipotence of God If the Hebrews had thought that God had hidden His face from Them they were now to have a wonderful demonstration that He was still with them and would be as long as they trusted Him If Pharaoh felt a Contempt for the God of a race of slaves he was to have his pride' humbled If he trusted in the gods of Egypt he was to see their power mocked Before condemning' the Egyptian king' it might be well for an individual to examine himself closely and see if he is free 'of the same pride that refused bend and stubborn determination to have his own way regardless of the wisdom of the course A large part of a woes are due to his own perverseness which brings its own punishment Pharaoh was not the only sinner in that respect but his example should teach an impressive lesson to others inally the appointed time arrived Moses and Aaron called together the elders of the people and informed them of the coming tragedy of the slaying of the first born of the Egyptians To avoid sharing this fate the Isarelites were in structed to kill a sacrificial lamb for each family or group of small families The blood of the animal was to be sprinkled on the doorposts as a sign of their faith in the promise of God while they partook of the roasted carcass of the lamb and bitter herbs as a symbol of their bitter experience in bondage It was a test of their faith and obedience: Any disobey ed have suffered the fate of the Egyptians This was bn impressive lesson in obedience Each family group attired in traveling clothes stood about the supper table ready to move at any instant' They knew not what minute the call would come but they were prepared As they ate and rejoiced in their deliverance the angel of death traveled with the wings of the wind over Egypt In every house except those guarded by the sprinkled blood he struck down the first born rom the palace of Pharaoh to the hut of the humblest in the land the tragedy was en acted and when the morning dawned Egypt was a land of mourning There could be no doubt about the source of it all and none as to the power of the God who could work such wonders Pharaoh realized his helplessness in a conflict with such a Being and not knowing what othei' calamity might' befall the nation he ordered Moses to lead the people out of his kingdom with all speed In fact the Egyptians were ready to revolt unless permission was granted The Israelites were Ordered to commemorate this event annually as a means of calling to mind the power of God in the mighty deliverance and impressing it upon the minds of the children It is still observed by orthodox Jews through out the world but the Christian world accepts the blood of Jesus as its atonement and Passover and observes the Lord's Supper instead of the Passover feast which had been a sym bol of the great deliverance The Passover was Intended to foreshadow the of the Lamb of God for the redemption of the human race The blood of the slain lambs saved the Israelites from the destroying angel and that of Jesus saved from the power of sin Thus the Passover was a period of looking forward as well as backward The condition of the wounded man was reported Tuesday after noon to be fair A pistol bullet entered his upper left chest and is believed to have entered his lung No charges had been filed Tues day pending outcome of the wound and also while investiga tion of the shooting was under Way oy county authorities A family dispute of long standing flared for the second time within a week Monday af ternoon ending with Ed Gilmore in a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and his broth er John Gilmore confined in the county jail County officers said John Gil more was being held for the shooting of his brother Ed on the inain street of Allen about 5 o'clock Monday afternoon Joe Gilmore was free on $500 bond following arraignment late Saturday on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon the result cf the wounding of Buck Gil more All four are brothers Begin Investigation Buck Gilmore was treated at a local clinic Thursday afternoon for a pistol wound in the foot Stanfield said John Gilmore was in his car at the time of the shooting Other details of the fray were not released No Charges The other difficulty took place Thursday also at Allen Joe Gil more entered a plea of not guil ty when arraignedin the justice court of Hill and prelimin ary hearing was set for July 26 Origin of the trouble is said to have been in a dispute arising over provisions of a will dispos ing of the estate of the mother of the Gilmore brothers B'l 'J Governor Lehman successor to Roosevelt as governor of New York and a warm friend and supporteT struck the court bill a hard blow in an open letter to Senator Wagner urging him to vote against the pet measure Com ing from such a source it is a of more than passing importance and may be the determning factor in defeating the bill It proves that the president has gone farther than some of his staunch supporters feel inclined to go and in dicates that he may have made a bad blunder in springing his court bill on congress without warning he is beaten in this fight other defeats may follow and his second ad ministration become quite different from the first in which his word was supreme with congress An initiated bill to curb appropriations bjr the legislature is being prepared a'nd will probably be ready for signers inthe near future It will be in the form of a constitutional amendment and its authors expect to make it air' tight against manipulation by future legislatures Something of the sort is badly needed and if this bill will do the work it should receive the hearty supporf'bf all classes of taxpayers' THE ADA WEEKLY NEWS
