I think that an ornament mast have some excuse for being1 In order to be really worth the time and trouble required to take care of it. Instead of this, we have representations of al! sorts of quaint and queer things that appear to me to have no right whatever in the drawing-room, to say the lfest.

"Some of these days I hope to see more of what might be ca led adaptation in the bestowing of our household decorations. The library is a good place for- curiosities unless one has a special room devoted to such purposes and they ought to be kept there instead of in the drawing-room or parlors. A cabinet with shelves might be placed in either of these rooms and filled with articles appropriate to the apartment. Itut how often do we find every sort of curio from the horrible and grotesque to the realistic and almost indecent, arranged in reception and family rooms. Of course, where space is limited, one must do the best one can; but all the same, there are many bits of bric-a-brac that would be much more agreeable if less prominently exhibited.

"In the item of furniture, one often feels that the rooms of the houses of the well to do people are much more like the private show offices of a general curiosity shop than the living apartments of persons of refined and educated taste. Irrigation is not new to the Rocky mountain region, for there are in New Mexico and Arizona the remains of reservoirs and irrigation ditcher used by a people who disappeared before the Indians came: but it is comparatively new so far as white settlers are concerned. The water of streams, lakes and artesian wells is used for irrigation.

Itemg allowed to" flow in ditches to the fields where it is wanted. For orchards, vineyards, most kinds of vegetables and for alfalfa a kind of giant clover irrigation is said to be actually superior to rain; watering by irrigation does not mean loss of sunshine, nor does it involve storms which rot or beat down crops. It merely supplies water to the roots of plants and in the right quantities and at the right time. Most of the California fruits, with which everybody in the east is now famili-ir, are grown on irrigated land, and 3.n3!,3$l acres of land In the United States were irrigated when the census of lS'Jil was taken. People who lelieve in irrigation as a substitute for rain assert that by its aid all the people in the United States could be fed from land that is now prctically desert Harper's Young People.
