W. H. Herrick, who died in Boston on Dec. 12, was born in Cabot and was 56 years old at the time of bis death. His early life was spent at bis home in Cabot and be came to St.

Jobnsbory 38 years ago. He lived here ever since then with the exception of 18 months service in the war. In the war he was a musician in the band of the Third Vermont regiment. He was foreman of the sealing of the weights at the scale works and performed his duties there with rare skill and faithfulness. DARTMOUTH COLLEGE NOTES. A. D. West, '95, St. J.

'91, spoke on Dr. Parkhurst in Old Chapel last week Wednesday. B. T. Marshall, '97, St.

J. '93, will sing second bass in the glee club on the trip which it will take this winter vacation. The club is the best one Dartmouth has yet turned out. The class of '97, after much debate, selected for a motto that suggested to the Academy in the fall of '92, by John Brown of Bedford, England, and which St. J.

'93, adopted, namely, a Greek motto, meaning Paul Clay, '97, St. J. '91, was elected president for the winter term of the class of '97. College closed Wednesday of this week for a three weeks' vacation. MISS HARVEY'S "FAIRIES." Miss Nellie May Harvey, in structor in elocution, invited a num ber of her friends to a recital given by her "Fairies" at Y.

M. C. A. Hall Tuesday evening. Twelve young misses adorned with white wings entered at the appointed hour, marched to music by the Junior orchestra, and were seated near the platform.

Each number was announced by the "Fairy Queen" and responded to by the one designated. Miss Harvey deserves much credit for her untiring efforts shown by the good speaking of her pupils. The entertainment was well attended and much enjoyed. ABOUT FOLKS. Dr.

S. T. Brooks, who was taken sick Sunday, is convalescing as his many friends will be glad to know. T. A.

Mackinnon, general manager cf the Boston and Maine railroad and who has many friends in this town, was tendered a complimentary banquet by the Snowshoe Club at their clubhouse near Penacook Lake, N. Friday evening. STEELE racy and a thorough knowledge of all the complications that might arise. Mr. Herrick was best known to our townspeople as a musician and he was a thorough lover of good music and in a quiet and unassuming way did much in all these years to keep up a high musical standard in the entire community.

For over a dozen years he was leader of the North church choir and during the time he was leader.singing tenor in the quartette. During most of his residence here he was leader of our band and to this organization he gave many years of faithful work in spite of many discouragements. Though of a quiet and retiring nature he had a great many warm friends who deeply mourn his ioss. The funeral was held at the resi-residence of Abijah Smith on Friday afternoon and was attended by many of his old associates at the scale works, Chamberlin Post, and the St. Johnsbury Band.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. Dr. A. H. Heath, assisted by Rev.

Dr. Edward T. Fairbanks. Music was furnished by the Mahogany Quartette. His two nearest relatives were present, a brother, L.

Herrick of Cabot, and a cousin, H. H. Scribner, of Montpelier. The body was escorted to the depot by a delegation from Chamberlin Post and the band, and the body taken to Cabot for interment. A twood.

E. D. Atwood, oldest son of Rev. Mark Atwood of this place, died at his home in Berlin Palls, N. last Thursday of hemorrhage.

He was 43 years old and bad been running a hotel there for several 'years. He leaves three brothers, including S. D. and W. B.

Atwood of this place, and two sisters. The body was interred in the family lot at Jericho. Mr. Atwood was a genial and kind-hearted man and many will regret to learn of his death. Daniels.

Mrs. Susan Daniels, wife of II. S. Daniels, died on Sunday of a hemorrhages at the age of 47 years. For the past four years she had been the cook at the boarding house at Fairbanks village and she performed her duties well and faithfully.

She leaves a husband and three sons. The funeral services were held at the boarding bouse conducted by Rev. M. Atwood. THE FRENCH PLA F.

The three act drama "Jean le Maud-it" was given at the Howe Opera House last Thursday evening by local talent under the auspices of the Catholic Foresters. At the conclusion of the drama the farce "Fouilly les Nounous" was given. The St. Johnsbury orchestra furnished music for the occasion. Several hundred people attended the play and the Foresters will net about $20 from the entertainment, The play was receixed SQ well that the boys are thinking of having it translated and giving it in English at an early date.

The St. Johnsbury Electric Company have reduced their meter rates tor residence and commercial lighting to take effect Jan. 1. The rates are reduced from 20 cents per 1000 Watt hours to 15 cents when paid within 1Q days from the date of bill. This is a discount of 25 per cent from the old rates.

When not paid within 10 days the old rates will prevail. Meter bills will be payable at the company's office quarterly, January, April, July and October. By this step the company have made a move in the right direction and the public heartily commend the act. With the good service this company give from early in the after noon until about 8 the next morning, the reduced rates, the additional powtr at the plant house and the new circuit recently added, tnis com pany is now in a first-class condition. We predict a large increase in bouse lighting by tbia move.
