2 THE POST-STANDARD, Syracuse, N. Monday, August 20, 1962 Radiation Bell Made by U. Altitude Test NEW YORK (AP)-- Dr. James A. Van Allen said Sunday that a huge new radiation belt in the lower reaches of the Van Allen has been formed around earth as rrsiilt of the July 0 high-altitude nuclear test conducted by the United States ovor the Pacific.

Van A Urn. a professor at the Slate University of Iowa, disco v- erod the radiation belt in 1958 which is named after him. The 1 belt circles the earth from an altitude of about 60 miles to perhaps as high as 100,000 miles. The Minneapolis Sunday Tribune, in a copyright story for Sunday's editions written by its science editor, Victor Cohn, the lower levels of the belt had been affected by the nucloar in July. Van AJlon agreed.

Van Allen, vacationing at Soidn- amptnn. N. he and his brrn studying the variations in radiation of the bolt for the patf year by usin.q the satellite Injun. The satellite, launched for scientific purpose? on June 29, 1961, is a 40-pound drum-shaped vehicle about 15 by 17 Inches. The results of the study, Van Allen said, were submitted to the government a short time ago.

He said that previous Russian tests had not affected the radiation bell. Cohn, in his story, quoted A PAT TO REMEMBER John Eaglesham was the center of attention Sunday when former Eisenhower bestowed an affectionate pat on the Scottish youngster. The children from nearby communities gathered outside Kirkoswald parish church to view the eminent visitor as he left after attending service at the Church of Scotland chapel. But Air Force officials and advisers have presented broad cut- lines of what space warfare could involve. One of the questions most often asked is whether the lite can be used as a vehicle for mass destruction. That question was posed at a hearing earlier this month by a House committee to Ivan Get-, ting, president of Aerospace Corp- That corporation is a nonprofit; organization set up to do research and advise the Air Force on ballistic missile, space and other systems.

Definitely Possible reply was: "There is absolutely no question from a technical viewpoint that a nuclear bomb could be put into space. There is no question that technically it is conceivable to bring the bomb down and hit a target with reasonable accuracy. Questions of reliability, questions of national policy are and also questions of cost. Is this; good way to do what you want! to do? "Is this way more sensible, say, than the Minuteman (the solid fuel ICBM)? These things are under continuous scrutiny and analysis." Getting did not elaborate in the public portion of his testimony before a military subcommittee of the House Government Operations Committee- Sufficient Thrust But, he presumably meant thai boosters used or soon to be used for launching satellites have thrust sufficient to put up a vehicle carrying a thermonuclear bomb. His mention of reasonable accuracy might mean within 10 or 15 miles of an aiming point.

The killing and mass destruction area of fusion bombs reaches out not less than twice that tance. The reliability factor would elude the question of being able to signal the satellite, without failure, at the point from which the weapon capsule should begin its steep descent, along a computed path, with a heat-prevention capsule coating protecting the bomb during re-entry. The accuracy with which the Russians put the two satellites into matching orbits, then brought them down at apparently prese- lected points, within six minutes of each other, points up the references made earlier by Getting, During the flights of the two manned vehicles, the Russians seemed to have succeeded bringing the vehicles within fair proximity of each other-significant if the art of intercepting, inspecting and destroying other ellifes is to be perfected. Nazis to get Rakosi out of a Hungarian prison and he went to the Soviet Union. Returning to his native land with the conquering Soviet army in 1945, he began his salami tactics against a government dominated by Socialists and the Smallholders party.

Rakosi once described his salami tactics this way: "Demanding a little more each day, like cutting up a salami, thin slice after thin Thus he demanded and finally got control of the Interior try and the police- From this strong position he ousted the other parties, the Communists took newspaper Nepszabdsag.
