He was 54. Abel, a star athlete at Hud-sonville High School in the 1930s, has headed the Midwest League since 1966. Teams are entered from Michigan, New York, Ohio and Indiana. Abel, who made his living as a salesman, was' a coach for several years after leaving Western Michigan University where-he, was captain of the baseball and football teams in 1937. He coached high school sports at Oxford, and Pontiac St.

Frederick. He tried professional baseball as a catcher in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system but could never break into the major leagues. In 1947 he coached a Pontiac team to the national amateur baseball title. Funeral arrangements were pending.
