News, Weather, Sports, Hams Tfcwrter, "The Talented By MARGARET MC MANUS Jane Morgan is a small pretty, blonde woman, who sings popular music, never to confused with J. P. Morgan, another small, pretty, blonde woman who sings popular music. Jane Morgan's mother, who was a pianist and had a classically trained voice, a all her life to be "an opera singer.

She wanted Jane to be an opera singer. Jane doesn't care for the opera, neither as singer nor listener. To this day she rarely goes. She gave up the Juilhard School or Music, to sing with a hand, and then went to Paris to be the star- act of a night club opening on the Champs She stayed there three years. It was a new gimmick, the American girl in Paris, singing American, songs in a French ciub.

Jane Morgan is very American. Her real name is Florence Currier. She was born in Boston and as a child, grew up in the neighborhood of Boston and Maine. She's a direct descendant of Nathaniel Currier, of Currier and Ivcs, Her grandfather was J. Frank Currier, whose pictures bang in the Lou COLOR SECRET SQUIRREL and MOROCCO ARE ASSIGNED TO GUARD A FOREIGN RULER Metropolitan.

Mbs Morgan, home from Paris these past 10 years, now appears in the best of the Amcri- supper clubs, carries on lie -American tradition of Las Vegas, and makes guest appearances on all the big American television shows. Her half- tour special, "The Morgan Show," was a distinct' success on Canada's CBS-TV. She will appear on the Dean Uartin show TV) where it's 18, all so (NTJC- casual Husband." On )cc. IS, she will be a guest on he Bell Telephone Hour's show, and early In February, she will appear on ABC-TV's Hollywood Palace. This is the way she likes to work now, a limited amount of touring, with personal appearances in the right places, about one television appearance a month, and properly spaced recordings, She has both a new Jane Morgan Pretty and Blonde album and a new single about to came out. 'Tm not working as hard as I used to, but I'm making more money," she said, "Isn't that the way iit's supposed to be? I'm just not as ambitious as I was when I. was 20." Jane Morgan is a very nice woman.

There is little guile about her and she seems almost loo gentle for the racket she's in, yet the centrifugal force has to be there or she could never have survived this successfully against the drive of all the otber lady singers. In her duplex cooperative apartment here on West Hst this rainy, gray November day, Miss Morgan was preoccupied with a family conference with two older brothers, C- Bertram CPA, Currier, a who lives lawyer and in Hanover, and Robert Currier, who Kvcs on Jane's 40 acre farm, "Blueberry Hill." in Kennebank Port, Maine, They had driven down to ec her just for the day. A third brother, Stephen, an engineer, lives in Newton, Mass, and an older sister, Mrs. Olga McCaffrey, lives in Williams- vilfc, Vermont. The family ties are strong in New England, and Jane Morgan, singer from New York and Paris, is slill very much a Yankee from Maine.

As a child, she spent all her summers In Kemmsbunk Port and as a performer she appeared Ire- quently in the summer Playhouse there, which her brother, Robert, owned and ran until recently. He has now leased it to new producers, and he runs "Blueberry Hill," where Ihe Curriers rent rooms to summer visitors, have an antique shop, and sell Jane Morgan blueberries. Fortunately, Jane Morgan is deeply attached to Kennebunkjl Port, is interested in antiques and eats blueberries. She is the youngest of the five children, by many years, and as a child, she was always taking lessons from her older brothers and sisters. "My mother was a stage mother," she said, "no doubt that- She had studied at the New England Conservatory end the Sorbonne and she want- cd to be a concert singer.

She had us all doing something musical and artistic. My sister was a fine ballet dancer, so I look ballet lessons from Olga. I took acting lessons from Robert, and musical composition and violin lessons from ray father, and piano lessons from my mother. 1 was brought up on strong quartets. I'd go to sleep at night listening to my parents and their friend playing chamber music." Whether or not such an abundance of classical music drove Jane Morgan straight to her hit recordings of "Fascination," and "Love Makes the World -Go Round." and "The Day The Rains Came," is a moot point.

However, her early classical training and the gift of a lovely voice, have worked well for her. She can sing any kind of song from popular to semi-classical to light opera, and she wants very much to put this range to use in a Broadway musical. "Oh, I'd lore to open out of town in Boston," she saw. 'That would be fun for me. I'm never in any one place very long at a time, but Maine is still home, and Boston is near enough.

It woukl be a lot of fun to hav a hit show in Boston." Miss Morgan's father, tbe late Bertram Herbert Currier, for many years, was the first cellist with the Boston Symphony, and with the Boston Opera Comp- pany He also composed music and Miss Morgan said it is a major frustration la her that she POLLY UNDERDOG 1 10:30 IN COLOR UNDERDOG TO THE RESCUE WHEN SWEET GETS IN TROUBLE A.
