Seduction. We ore upon a delicate theme a subject which, to be properly treated, would require the cool and deliberate judgment of a Marshall, the classic taste of a Wirt, and the eloquence of a Henry; but ve, although devoid of their abilities, will give you, gentle reader, a sketch from real life, hich we hope will not be without its moral. Some few-years ago a vessel arrived from Bremen, with enii. grants. There was among them, one family who seemed so linked together by the bond of mutual af Adduction.

Fine times these for the steamboat Maryland, and other conveyances to Annapolis. Lots of oflke holders and office seekers rushing like a rotten apple to the centre of gravity, or like the water in a gutter, running down hill to seek its own level. On Monday, as the governor was to be inaugurated, there was quite a cram on board the Maryland. Crowds of anxious expectants and trembling incumbents were eager to be present at the ceremony of the inauguration and the staunch little craft was freighted by them until she sank almost to her guards. Nor were these all.

There was on board some twenty or thirty good, kind, affectionate souls, who went on board to see their friends off, and were IJ-HOUCK'S PANACEA. As my business frequently calls) me down Seuth Charles street, I have lieen frequently surprised to see the number of boxes which are daily packed up by Dr. Hou.K.and marked for various parts of the United States, and aa my bump of inquisiliveness is pretty strongly developed, I had, the other day, the curiosity lo step in and inquiie as to the number of bottles sold annually by him, and although I was prepared to learn that the number was large, I had not tfie. most distant idea that it was as great as it, really is. He dd during the sear just closed, thirty thousand bottles; hile his sales during the two pteceding years, were upwards of thirty six thousand, thus slnwing an increase in favor of the past year, of atpnt ninety-eight per making an ablegate for the last three jears of upwards of sixty -six thousand buttles and Iging from the rapid increase of the last year, I think it fair to infer, that his sals the present year will reach fifty thousand bottles.

These facts afford conclusive evidence of the ellicacy of his Panacea, for unless it possessed intrinsic virtues, it could not main INAIOCBATIOX OF GOVERNOR GRASON Below we give the address of Ilia Excellency, Wm. Grasoni delivered upon his taking the oath of office, on Mon day last. We are decidedly pleased with his remarks, particularly those in reference to "interfer fection, that they were held up as an example of domestic felicity. They had been driven from their home, the birth place of their sires, the hearth around which their kindred hud assembled for ten tunes, but yet their affections were so entwined, so much occupied in their counselling and advising i. they were deaf to the warning chime of the ben, and never woke up to a consciousness of their sitivation until they observed the shores receding and the boat crushing and splashing her way through the ice.

Hc-re was a fix." They remonstrated to the captain, but, like Capt. Parry, he knew too well tain the unrivalled popularity it has attained as a curative medicine, and for one, I am disposed to look upon Dr. HoncK as a national benefactor, and that to the healing powers of his excellent medicine, humanity is greatly indebted. So decidedly popu'ar has it became, that nearly all the apothecaries and druggists in the country, throughout our wide range of territory, are, by force of public opinion, compelled to keep it, as the having -f it tends to increase their custom for other medicines 1 have used it in my family for several years, and never without deriving decided benefit from its use. In two recent cases in my family, the one bilious t.

A PARENT. the fickleness of the weather, and had no notion of that each heart seemed linked to the other, and to sever one from the group was to rend the whole asunder. They were in poverty, and on landing upon our shores the children could not be supported by the parents without they labored themselves. The eldest of the children, was Margaret, a girl just entering into her teens; the companion of her mother, the pride of her father, ho saw in her the image of his first beloved.

She was placed out to service' and became the menial of a family, the head of which was a heartless sensualist. As the girl grew up, and her budding beauties were daily developed-she attracted the attention of her villain master-who, Iago like, used every means to corrupt her mind, and when she had scarce entered into womanhood, effected her ruin. Simple, confiding and affectionate, she scarce knew the sacrifice she had made; the gulph of misery and disgrace into which she was plunged. Her betrayer was a married man, and he to screen lys villain', urged her te enter upon a life of infamy. She consented, and the firsi knowledge the wretched father had of his child's disgrace, was that she was an inmate of a notorious den in Bath street.

He sought her there, for even in shame he would not desert her, but the old hag 5LT HALTlMOKd OlTY.GUARt ATTENTION The members are requested to attend at JAMART'S, WATER, Sheet, THIS (WEDNESDAY) EVENING, 9th inst at o'clock Punctual attendance is requested, as business of the utmost will be submitted. Maryland Legislature, January 7. In the Senate, a bill was received from the house, authorising Thomas Dowden, Sheriff of Alleghany county, to give bctnd at any time previous to the first of February next Referred. A bill was reported by Mr. Magruder, from the committee on the judiciary, to confirm a sale made of lands belonging to the heirs of Preston McComas.

This bill had a first, and by special order a second, and was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading. On motion of Mr. Stew art, a committee was appointed to visit the Majyland Hospital, and' report its condition. A petition was offered by Mr. Ely, from Wm.

P. Jenks and Rachel Story, of Baltimore county, praying that an act may passed, authorising them to bring into the State a OFFICE OF THE MARYLAND INSURANCE COMPANY, January 4th, 1833 The President and Directors have this day declared a Dividend of ten dollars oh each share of stock, payable on or after Thursday the lOihday of January instant. Ignorant of our language, he could not express himself so as to be understood, but he fortu nately met a member of the ciiy police, who was versed in his language. Enlisting his assistance, and that of another police officer, they proceeded to the house, and instituted a search, but the girl had been conveyed away or concealed, and their effuris were fruitless.

Wnuld that the heartless wretch who has been the cause of ail this misery, had seen the despair of the o'd man, when he found his child to be lost to him. No tears coursed each other dow his wrinkled check, but the glare of his eye, the clenched hands, and the quivering lips, betokened an agony that words could not give utterance to If this poor girl's stdueer has yet one spark of human sympathy in his breast, he will restore her to her The author of r11 this ruin, has a ence with the course of justice," by the use of the pardoning prerogative. We are indebted to the Annapolis Republican, for an account of the inauguration. At one o'clock, according to previous arrangement, the Governor elect entered the Senate Chamber, arm in arm with Governor Veazy, and took his seat at the right of the President of the Senate. The Speaker of the House of Delegates, preceded by the Sergeant at arms and followed by the mem bers, then eolered, in compliance to the invitation of the Senate, when the Governor elect proceeded to take the oath of offioe and subscribe to the Constitution.

The custom of providing a collation at the Government House was o.mitted. This is, at least, a good beginning. The abolishing of the beastly scenes which have been enacted at those go-vermental "blow-outs," is a most creditable reform. Fellow Citizens: It is natural that I should feel gratified with the distinction, of being the first Governor of Maryland elected by the people; and that I should wish to discharge my duties in such a manner, as to justify the expectation of those, ho have thought me worthy of their confidence. But the office of chief magistrate is of such a nature, as to exclude the hope of giving entire satisfaction, either to the public, or to his own personal friends.

He is often obliged to make selections frr office, without a personal knowledge of the applicants, and to heir the responsibility of injudicious recommendations. Sometimes he is compelled to choose between persons of equal merit, and to overlook claims, which appear to be entitled to a preference. While the governor was appointed annually by the Legislature, and was associated with an executive council, the errors of his administration, whether real or imaginary, were often ascribed to his constitutional advisers, and sometimes to that branch of the government, upon which he was dependant for office. Being now elected by the people, and alone responsible his official acts, he must expect to bear all the public censure and personal resentment, which may be incurred in the discharge of his duties. He therefore owes it to his own character, to the dijnity of his office, and to the people who have honored him with their confidence, to depend in some degree upon his own judgment, in all his official proceedings; and to select, to office, such men, as he believes to be capable of serving the public, even if others, of inferior qualifications, should have stronger claims upon his friendship, or present a "reafer number of recommendations.

The most painful duty of the Executive is the negative one of declining to interrupt the course of justice. The p'jvver of arresting prosecutions and of pardoning criminals is the more liable to abuse, because it is difficult to resist its exercise, when the life or liberty of a fellow-creature is depending upon it; and when it is expected that official errors will be readily excused, if (hey are supposed to spring from feelings of humanity. The pow er of pardun is however a public trust, intended for extraordinary cases, which could neither be distinctly described, nor provided for, in aay general law. It ought, therefore, to be used in such cases only; and not for the gratification of the person invested with it, or for party purposes, or in opposition to the general policy of the criminal law; the object of which, is to suppress vice, preserve the public peace, and protect every citizen from injury and violence. It is my intention to act according so the views now expressed, as far as my power and means of information will enable me to do so; and to perform, faithfully, whatever duties are required of me by the consiitution and laws.

I enter upon the discharge of my duties, with a deep sense of wahtl owe ta the people of Mary land, ith an earnest desire to promote their interests; and with the hope, that, atthe end of my official term, I shall return to private life, without having forfeited their confidence. From Canada. The last Toronto Colonist contains the following postscript; we doubt its correctness, though we ahall not be surprised to hear of continual inroads. "Intelligence has been received in town this morning, of another attempt on the part of the pirates, to effect a landing in Canada. On Monday evening last, while Col.

Kirby was walking along shore, from Fort Erie Barracks, towards Point Abino, lie observed some persons approaching him, on the ice. He immediately relarned to the barracks, and having got his men under arms, they marched against the ho turned about and retreated. Hff-A PROCLAMATION' Whkreas. by tlie 31st section of the act of the General Assembly of Maty-land, passed at December sessicn 1837, chap. 333, entitled an "Act to guard asainst fraud in the exercise of the elective franchise in the City Baltimore, and to secure the rights voters, and to establish with greater certainty the rules of evidence to be nbserved at all election in Baid city," it was enacted lhat, at the "first registration of voters, under this act, every per on on making his application te the Registers to have his vote registered, and who may by said Registers be adjudged to brf entitled pally to vote, may declare his approval or disapproval this act; and for that purpose, the said Registers shall provide a box, in hich the ots of voters shall he deposited, and the said ballots shall have written on them the words "Registry" or "No Registry," and the said ballots, on the day of finally concluding said registry, shall be counted bv said Registers, and a certificate made out by them of the number ballots for the "Reentry," and these for "No Regitr;" and the said certificate, together with the number of all the legal voters contained on said registries, shall be transmitted by said Registers te the Governor, and by him laid before the Gem ral Assembly at its next and if it be found, on comparing the number ef balUts with werds "No Registry" on them with the number of the names of all the legal voters registered, that a majority of said legal voters have decided against this law, notice of that lact shall be given to the Governor by the presiding officers ef the two houses of the Legislature, and the Governor shall isiiie a fioclamation, declar.ng this act, thence forward, null, void and of no effect; but, if it shall appear that a majority of all the legal voters have not decided against this law, the same shall continue and be in full force: and the Governor oh lecdving notice of the fact from the presiding officers of the twe House ef Assem-b'y shall issue his Proclamation to that effect." And whereas on the fifteenth day of October last the said Registers did transmit to tne a certificate made out by them of the umber of ballots for the "Registry" and those for "No Registry," together with tho number of the names of all the legal voters contained on the registries made out ami preserved bv them in virtue of the Act aforesaid ef Derernber session, 1837, chap.

333. And whereas on the 31 day of January inntant, I transmitted the said certificate to the General Afsein-My, as rpquired of me, by the said recited section aforesaid of tho act aforesaid. And whereas I have this day been in'ormed bv a joint communication from Ihe MonuraUe Richard Thomas, President of the Senate, and the Honorable Augustus It. Pollers, Speaker pr tern, of the House flf Delegates of Maryland, that it appears from the said certificate, of ihe Registers of voters for the City of Baltimore, transmitted as aforesiid, that a majority of the leg.il voters of the City of Baltimore did not decide aeninsi the law passed at December session, 1837, chap. 333, as aforesaid.

Now, therefore, Thomas W. Vkazey, Governor of the State of Maryland, in pursuance of tho authority vested In me, as aforesaid, do hereby proclaim, that the act passed at the December session, chap. 333, entitkjl "An act to guard against fraud in the exercise of the elective franchise in the City of Baltimore, and to te-cure tho richts of voters, an I to establish with greater certainty the rules of evidence to be observed at all eh ctions in said city" is and continues to be in full force and effect Given under my hand and tho great seal of tho State of Marvland, at the city of Annapolis, this fifth daughter, fair, beauteous, and virtuous. Let him bring it home to himself. What would be his misery, if that cherished one on whom his hopes are built, whom he, in his fond affection expects to cheer him in his old age, should be destroyed by the blight of a villain's ticachery? The bereaved old man who he has robbed of his daughter, has affections as lasting, and had hopes as sangaine as himself; then can he keep hisdaughter from him? Can he drive her dow the abyss of ruin, on the brink of which she is loitering? If he is so heartless, if he is so devoid of human sympathy, if he can look on and glut his appetite upon the wreck of domestic happiness and female virtue, let him beware.

We are in possession of his name, and that of his vile pander, and we will not hesitate to blazon forth his style and title in full, if speedy reparation be not done. Mechanical Suction Engine. We were invited yesterday to examine a specimen of the efforts of Baltimore mechanics.in a new suction fire engine, just finished for our neighbors of the Mechanical Company. It is really, a most beautiful piece of mechanism, and if it proves but as serviceable as it is beautiful, of which we have no doubt, it will be a valuable acquisition to the many efficient pieces of apparatus under the control of the Baltimore fire de-partmcnt. It was designed and built under the immediate superintendence of a committee appointed by the Company Messrs.

Odell Ives the carving was executed by Messrs. Murray Hays; the painting by Mr. John Curlett, and (he fancy painting by Mr. Wm. Curlett, jr.

The design on the front panncl is a representation of Ike burning of the steeple of St. Peter's church, and is highly creditable to this young and promising artist. Wc had like to have forgotten to slate, that a repast was served up, and a few bottles of fine old wine uncorked to the success of "The the name which has been given to tho engine. tion was offered by Mr. Putts, from L.

P. M. Bilch, for relief. The proceedings of the inauguration then took placp, and the Senate adjourned. There was but little done in the house of delegates.

"Attitude is Every Thing." The editor of the New Orleans Sun, in speaking of great actors and actresses having had bad luck in certain plat es, thus describes his own success a year or two since "We once played Tell in Washington city ourselves, to aslirn house although the talented Mrs. S. Richardson played our wife. We were not sorry, however, for we made a bad business of it such as losing our wig when taken prisoner shooting at the apple with the arrow wrong-end first standing off four or five feet from our ife, when we had to kiss her, so that when our arms clasped her neck, oht person described a kind of semi-circle, an-1 set the audience roaring with laughter." Dividends. The Cumberland Bank of Allegany has declared a dividend of three per ce nt, on iis capital, for the last months.

The American Life Insurance and Trust Company has declared a half pearly dividend of four and half per cent. The Baltimore Life Insurance Company has declared a ilf yearly dividend ef four per cent. The Potomac Insurance Company of Georgetown has declared a half yearly dividend of sixteen per cent. The Baltimore and Fredericktown, Baltimore and lUis-terstovvn, and Baltimore and Yorktown Turnpike Road Companies, have each declared a dividend, this day, of one and a quarter per cent, for the last six mofiths. New Invention.

A citizen of Vicksburg, Miss has invested a niece of machinery to save pow er in the propelling of steam boats. The Sentinel says, its application to steam boat navigation, will prove one of the most imporlant inventions of the day; as it will save nearly three-fourths oi the fuel at present consumed in the generation of steam. It adds "We are not well acquainted ith machinery, but from ihe experiments which we witnessed, we are disposed to think that the new invention will succeed." Cincinnati Republican. We yesterday received from Cincinnati a paper bearing the above title, under the head of which find the name of our friend Bradbury of the News, as Editor. This paper is political, and advocates the election of General Harrison lo the presidency.

Of course we wish him "all soils" of success barring any desire for or against the elevation of his candidate for the presidency. In that matter we bow to the will of the "sovereign people." Whatever they do satisfies us. Decimal Tables of Interest. This is the title of a ork just published by John Joseph lleehtrs, a copy of which has been placed on our desk. It may be a good system, and well adapted to compute interest on current accounts, but tho mechanical execution is wrctthedly bad.

It is ts he regretted that disagreements should take place between the dep artment and the proprietors of tho steamboat and railroad lines of the country.
