McGuire, 37, said he would seek a high school or college coaching job in New York. McGuire is a native of New York, played college basketball at St. John's, and starred for the New York Knickerbockers in the NBA before moving to Detroit late in his career. This year, his third full season as head coach, McGuire's Pistons won 34 games and lost 46, finished third in the Western sion and were eliminated by the St. Louis Hawks in the playoffs.

McGuirc's resignation was reported Saturday by the Detroit News, which said he had submitted it by letter to Pistons' owner Fred Zollner. Although McGuire was reported under fire during'the season, he said his parting was amicable. BOSTON Tommy Heinsohn scored two climactic baskets in the waning seconds as Boston pulled out a 117-114 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday night in the opening game of the National Basketball Association championship playoffs. A game which began somewhat sloppily ended in a hectic flurry with the score tied three times and the lead changing three more times in the final quarter. The score was knotted 110-all when Bill Russell converted one of two free throws and made it 111-110 with only 1 minute 42 seconds remaining.

The Lakers' great Jerry West, a superb performer along with Elgin Baylor and Dick Barnett, cut down court under the basket. As he went into the air, Heinsohn blocked the shot, got the ball and went the. length of the court for a layup with 70 seconds ieft Af Dick Farrell is a fiterc competitor. The big righthanded hurler of the Houston Colt puts everything he has into his work. He throws just about as hard as any piteiher in the game.

He fights to win, but he isn't one to sulk over a defeat. And when he loses, he readily accepts the blame if he deserves it. He will not, however, stand for being made the whipping boy for others. That just about explains his bitterness toward his former bosses, ttie Los Angeles Dodger brass. Even the sweet revenge Farrell enjoyed when he beat the Russell rebounded a Barnett Dodgers on Sept.

On the latter, Sam fired the length of the court and Heinsohn made it 115-110 with 37 seconds on the clock.

On the same, play, Russell collapsed from exhaustion and a whack on the chin and was helped from the floor. But by that time, he had helped break down the Western Division champions with 25 points and 29 rebounds. Heinsohn scored two more free throws, one after the final buzzer, to nail down the verdict. Baylor was the game's, high scorer with 33 points, while West and Barnett added 25 apiece. Heinsohn, held below his usuai total, managed 19 points, with 10 in the final period.

Sam Jones was Boston's ace marksman with 29 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. i Boston survived an early deficit, 17-30, and the second period loss of ace rookie John Havlicek, The Celtics then battled the Lakers even terms in the second half, Havlicek sustained a severely sprained Jelt ankle, was hospitalized and probably will miss the rest of the best-of-7 scries which resumes here Tuesday Bob Cousy, retiring Celtics captain, set a record for playoff an- pearances with his 104th game, topping the 103 mark hung up by veteran Dolph Schayes of Syracuse, The Celtics were trying for fifth consecutive NBA playoff crown and sixth in seven years They had one of their lowest playoff periods ever when they were down 30-21 at the end of the opening quarter. Only a tap-in by Russell and a long jumper by 3am Jones it that, close, LOS ANGELES Baylor slide that was to cost them the pennant, hasn't changed Dick's attitude toward the Dodgers' front office gang. He admits that was the most satisfying triumph of his career, but it didn't change his feelings. The Dodgers sold Farrell off to the Colts for $125,000 in the National League expansion draft in the fall 1961.

As it turned out, Dick feels that the Dodgers did him a favor when they shipped him to Houston. "I don't deny I was bitter about being released by the Dodgers," said Farrell, "but that's not the reason for my grudge against the club, I'll never forget how they tried to make me out as the goat after they lost the 1961 pennant. I can't understand why they singled me out. I had. an 8-7 record' with 12 saves, and that was better than some of the other pitchers on the team." Farrell is happy in his new role as a starting pitcher.

Since joining th Colts, Dick has developed a pretty good curve and a fine "slip pitch" to make his blazing fast ball more effective. He's learning to pitch with his head as well as with his arm--something he didn't have much time to do when he was relieving just about every other day. Toronto Holds Series Lead Wi nqs DETROIT AP)-The desperate Detroit Red Wings, their backs to the wall in the Stanley Cup finals, cashed in on two goals by diminutive Alex Faulkner Sunday night and edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2. The victory came in the game coach Sid Abel had said Wings must win to retain 'any hope of capturing -the National Hockey League's ancient trophy of supremacy. But the Leafs, still lead the best- of-7 series 2-1 after easy victories in Toronto last week.

The fourth game will be in Detroit Tuesday with the fifth back in Toronto Thursday. Faulkner, a 26-year-old rookie who was cast adrift from the Toronto farm system, netted both his goals in the second period. Each came after the Leafs had battled back to tie the score on fluke goals by Dave Keon and Tim Horton. Veteran Vic Stasiuk, banished twice to the minors during the NHL season and coming off the injury list, sent Detroit ahead just 33 seconds after the start. (AP) -The Buffalo Bisons gained the final round of the American Hockey League's Calder Cup competition by defeating the Providence Reds, 3-1, Sunday night. The triumph enabled the Bisons to clinch the best-of-seven series, 4 games to 2. Buffalo, which compiled the best record in the circuit in winning the Western Division crown during, the regular season, now will meet the winner of the Cleveland Hershey semifinal round series for the playoff crown. With the score tied at one-all after the second period, Art Stratton and Barry Cullen fired goals in the final period for the Bisons. Stratton, a standout in the series, clicked at 14:14 on a.

short shot from the left on John McKenzie's rebound. Goalie Ed Giacomin made a fine save on McKenzie's blast from the right. His clearance went to Stratton on the left and the clever center slipped the disc behind the Providence goalie after faking in a shot. The Reds yanked their goalie with 71 seconds remainig in order to attack with six men. The gamble backfired when Barry Cullen fired from 50 feet into the open cage.

Rookie Doug Robinson scored for Buffalo in the first period and Ed MacQueen tied it up for the Reds in the second session. You can't know how tough such a decision is to make." Several times before, Cousy has toyed with the idea of retiring in order to spend more time with his family.

He has frequently maintained, also, it is much more difficult for him to get into the proper mental attitude top performance demands even if he is physically able to keep going strong. Now the agile athlete who has spent 13 of his 34 years with Boston in the National Basketball Association adds the matter of pride. "I don't want them to remember me as a guy who couldn't make the Cousy says. "The time comes when you go graciously. I'm going." But the pangs cut deeply Into the fiber of the sensitive, sensational playmaker.

If he hadn't had second and third thoughts about retirement Cousy would have contradicted the picture of a self-styled "very human being who wept freely at the historic March 17 Boston Garden sendoff, "The Celtics have been my life," Cousy said. "When I think of what I'll miss, I think that I'a like to play 20 more years." Bob got very little sleep the week before "Cousy Day," worried how he could say his thanks and goodbyes. When it was over, he looked more tired than after the most testing of playoff battles, heaved a deep sigh and said: "I couldn't go through that again. If I had any thoughts about coming back next year, this takes care of them, "I'm going to make far less money, but that's the price of retiring before you begin to show age and wear If you can af- still ford leave while you're on top." POST-STANDARD made it 2-0. In less than a minute Cleveland took a 3-0 lead on John Ferguson's goal. Fred Glover, the Barons' playing coach, knocked in the last goal at 8:10 of the third period. The shutout was the first in a playoff game for Les Binkley, the Cleveland goaltender who wears contact lens. He made 26 saves.

But Keon tied it before the end of the first period, scoring out actually shooting the puck, He lost control and Terry Sawchuk slid out as the puck rolled past him. Faulkner whose goals wor two games for Detroit in the semifinal series with -Chicago, put the Wings ahead again in the second period. He banged the puck past goalie John Bower on a carrora shot off the goal post. Horton tied ic midway in the riod after Sawchuk had stopped a shot by Red Kelly. The puck rolled loose in front of the goal and dribbled in off Horton's skate.

tie lasted orrty 33 seconds before Faulkner scored the winner. Marcel Pronovost fired the puck from near the blue line and Faulkner deflected it past Bower. Toronto lifted Bower with 50 seconds left and pressed for the equalizer with six attackei-s. The Leafs almost got it with left, but Sawchuk smothered the puck under a huge pileup in front of his net. Sawchuk made 80 saves and won the plaudits of an Olympia Stadium crowd of 13,690, Bower had 28 saves.
