E2 Coping E8 Movie Crossword E7 Television THE EVENING SUN, MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 1991 CALL ACCENT: 332-6405 E1 High stakes lure her to BASS circuit Making sense of men's scents By PhyKis Briil Evening San Staff YOU DONT HAVE TO be big to catch a big fish, says Vojai Reed, you just have to be smart It's that kind of thinking that has helped make Reed a champion bass angler on the women's circuit as well as the first woman to fish on the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society's tournament trail, the most lucrative fishing circuit in the world. -Reed, who lives in 0 (3 T7-'- I i 0 Broken Bow, entered the Missouri BASS Invitational on Truman Reservoir in May and caught 22 V4 pounds of bass. The only woman, she finished 58th in a field of 234 and was less than 2 pounds out of the money. It was a respectable showing, but it was too late to qualify her for the annual end-of-sea-son BASS Masters Classic being held on the Chesapeake Bay this week.

Still, she arrived in Baltimore yesterday, to root for husband Charlie, who will be a contender. The decision to allow women into the traditionally all-male circuit came in April, after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers threatened to revoke BASS permits to hold tournaments on Corps-managed reservoirs if women were denied participation. BASS agreed to change the rules, and the 55-year-old Reed entered the last open contest of the season a couple Fishing is as much a mental sport as a physical ons. There are so many things about bass fishing you need to know VOJAI REED fl ATELY I have been shopping around 1 1 for a new "fragrance," which is a hip Ll thing for a man to do these daya.

This new fragrance should say something about my personality. It should be bold. It should be distinctive. On the other hand, it should not be too bold or too distinctive, as I am by nature a shy person and would be mortified to stand out in a room because of my scent Right now, I'm leaning toward Eternity For Men by Calvin Klein, a fragrance that appeals to me for the most bask of all reasons: Apparently the stuff drives women wild. I say this because in the glossy magazine ads for Eternity, a man of indeterminate age is shown lying on the beach with a fetching young woman nuzzling him about the neck.

The look on his face is serene and yet confident The look on her face is that of a woman who, um, well, has just been ravaged by her man like a wild boar. Quite frankly, that is the sort of image I'm looking for serene and yet confident A man who would be comfortable lying on a beach after ravaging his woman like a wild boar. Right now I am comfortable lying on a beach only if not too hot and there aren't any sand flies or chiggers about and no menacing 260-pound bikers nearby with a Marshall Tucker Band tape blaring from their cassette deck while they crush empty Bud cans on ((heir foreheads and have their way with runaway farm girls from Nebraska, i Not that Fm making a value judgment. on that kind of lifestyle. It's just not me.

But back fo the search for a new fragrance. The other day I found myself in a large men's store which happened to be selling Eternity for Men. This was my big chance. Eagerly, I splashed a few drops on my face from a sample bottle! I let it settle into the pores of my skin to work its inevitable magic. Then I turned to my wife and gave her my best come-hither look, a smoldering Jimmy Smits-type stare that says (or is supposed to say, anyway): "Hey, baby.

Let's you and me do a little ravaging behind that sand dune over there." For a moment, she seemed lost in thought, as if captured by my spell Then she said: "Did you bring the garbage cans out by the curb? Tomorrow's the pickup day." This, of course, was not exactly the answer I had hoped for. If a man is wearing the right fragrance, it seems to me that a woman will not be consumed with thoughts of garbage cans and sanitation department pickup schedules. Instead, her eyes will glisten. Her skin will glow. Her breathing will quicken perceptibly when she's near him.

Then in a husky voice she will say: "To hell with the garbage cans. To bell with the dinner dishes. To bell with the kids' homework and their baths and the fact that your mother is visiting and there's not a thing in the bouse to eat Let us go lie on a beach, Eduardo, so that you can ravage me like a wild boar." Of course, being the shy sort of person that I am, I could not take a woman up on such an offer if for no other reason than my name is not Eduardo. The thing is, I just want to be asked. This way I would ha ve the opportunity to say: "Poor child, no, I'm sorry.

I cant lie on a beach with you and ravage you like a wild, um, whatever that animal is. "Too many people around. Plus the sand flies and chiggers. No, it would never work out" Anyway, given the disturbing developments in that men's store, the logical question is: Have I given up on Eternity for Men? Not quite. Let's just say I'm mildly disappointed that the fragrance apparently summons images (at least in some people) of egg shells and coffee grinds and three-day-old newspapers simmering in a large Rubbermaid container.

Unless it's just me that provokes that kind of thought pattern. Then again, maybe I have to take a long, hard look at some of the other fragrances on the market There is Paco Rabane Wear Paco And Be Remembered. What Is Remembered Is Up To There is Balendaga Power of There are Perry Ellis and Guess and Lagerfeld Photo and many, many more. So many fragrance, so little time. Although if anyone mentions Hefty trash bags, we might have a problem here.

days later. Come September, she says, shell be competing right along with the men in all six Bass Invitational tournaments of the '91-'92 season. Why make the leap from the women's circuit to the men's circuit? It's simple, says Reed: The stakes are higher. In a typical Bass'n Gal tournament, "you pay $150 to enter and can win a fully rigged bass fishing boat worth about $20,000," she says. On the other hand, in a BASS Invitational, you pay $600 to $1,000 to enter but can win more than $100,000.

Those invited to fish in the Classic, which is considered the World Series of fishing, have proved themselves by fishing well in a series of BASS tournaments throughout the season. This is the first time tbe Classic has been in Baltimore. Forty men will be competing for the top prise, which includes more than a $1 million in endorsements and sponsorship, $50,000 in cash and a lot of prestige. As for the techniques of fishing, there's really no reason for separating men and women, says Reed. "It's not like the PGA where they can keep women out because men can hit a golf ball farther.

Mat i J.k it ri By Stave) McKarrow Evening Sua Staff be radio waves in Baltimore have heated up with a significant format change for simulcast AMFM stations WYST (1010 AM and 913 FM). 92 Star's adult contemporary music sound went up-tempo to a "rythmic CHR" format short for dance-oriented Contemporary Hit Radio and tbe stations assumed a new identity as 92 Q. "It's way beyond a format tweaking. We're really a whole new radio station," says promotions director Hal Martin.

New call letters, which will Include the letter but have not been revealed, are pending FCC approval "within a few days," according to Martin. The change wu ordered by corporate owner United Broadcasting Company, of Betbesda. It shifts the target audience of the stations to the key 18-to-S4 age grouping, younger than that addressed by the 10-year-old 92 Star's easy favorites formula. Competitive targets include both WESB-FM 104.3 (B-104), alto a CHR format, and the urban-contemporary-oriented WXYV-FM 102.7 (V-103). "We think that there's a big bole in the market for this kind of station," says Martin.

Listeners were not warned before the 11 easy favorites format was replaced with dance songs at 4 p.m. Friday. No on-tbe-air personnel changes were announced as part of the station change, although Martin says that in at least the first week of the new sound, "you wont a lot of disc Jockeys" as the station emphasises music.

An exception is Don O'Brien's weekday morning program, which will be heard as usual. The station promises only one commer-. cial interruption every hour. The new sound is being administered by a new program director, Jeff Ballen-tine, who comes to Baltimore from Day- ton, Ohio's WGTZ-FM. One of the consult- ants involved in designing the new format is Steve Kingston, currently program director of New York's highly-rated who wu formerly involved in B-104's op- eration in Baltimore.
