The New Programs Committee voted M Thursday to deny a budget request of about $55,000 for the Eiperimental College. Committee chairman Roy Hoover said financing was rejected becase, among other things, committee members felt the college's program didn't really present anything new. But an administrator of the college, Char Masterman, said the program was being "railroaded." He said the committee had questioned the admissions policy of the college, including a requirement that students be willing to do "both theoretical analysis and active work for social change." Holes are drillsd into the ground or mountainside to harness the power underground. In the St. Helena Range in California, temperature from 200 to 350° F have been capped. In Iceland and Japan, the steam from volcanic fissures has been used for many years to tieat public buildings and schools. Volcanic power lias been used industrially in Tuscany on Ihe west coast of Italy. There holes have been drilled in the mountainside and the escaping steam has been used as a source of energy for engines generating electric current. For a long time the hoi springs in volcanic districts have been used as laundries and as baths for the treatment of physical illnesses. Volcanoes have also benefited (he tropic regions by enriching the soil. Eruptions deposit potash and phosphates, excellent fertilizers, on the ground. r o (Donna Magnani of Middleion, Massaclmsejis. wins a prize for this question.
